Could Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud be an MVP candidate this season? According to former New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr, the Christian athlete’s chances look good.
“C.J. was as any good as any quarterback as I’d seen in the past 10 years [with] intermediate throws,” Carr said on his “Home Grown Network” podcast. “That’s like that 15, 20, even up to 30, 35-yard throws. Beautifully layered. I was at his pro day at Ohio State when he came out, that’s when he excelled.”
According to Chron, Carr expects Stroud’s game to return to rookie form.
“Carr made a convincing X’s and O’s case for Stroud, focusing on the new offensive coordinator Nick Caley. Carr views Caley as an upgrade from former offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik, especially in Caley’s creativity in designing play-action passes,” the outlet reported on Carr’s perspective. “Stroud’s highlight reel so far features many play-action intermediate and deep throws, where he can place the ball into an open window between coverage layers.”
“C.J. is an excellent quarterback. He has clutch ability…Let’s just be able to enjoy C.J. Stroud. I want my son to put on C.J.’s jersey on a Sunday afternoon, come into the living room, and let’s all enjoy the Texans playing great football,” Carr said.
While known for his on field talent, many of Stroud’s fans love him for his strong faith in Christ.
“I want other people to know that they don’t have to rely on themselves or worldly things; they can rely on the Lord,” the quarterback said, per Athlete’s Corner. “That’s really the only way you can truly be peaceful and truly know what true love is.”
Meanwhile, his nonprofit, the CJ Stroud Foundation, aims to “inspire, uplift, and support communities in their times of need, ensuring they feel valued, appreciated, and cherished” with the “love of Christ through charity work.”
Much of Stroud’s nonprofit’s work goes towards “fostering a sense of belonging and hope” among youth. Its “Fresh Start” scholarship does just that.
It will award $1,000 to seven student-athletes who are moving into dorms and “need help starting strong.”

However, as he looks ahead to the 2025 season, he has one thing in mind: deepening his relationship with God.
“Lock it back in with the Lord. Kinda in the lukewarm season – one foot in, one foot out. The Lord has helped me get outta that,” he said previously, per Fox News. “So, that’s really my 2025 goal is to be locked in with the Lord as much as possible. You know, fasting and praying, being part of a church here in Houston. That’s my 2025 goal, being closer to the Lord.”
While Stroud certainly has a lot to look forward to this season, fans know he will continue to rely on Christ every step of the way.
