Faith-Filled NFL Coach Calls Texans QB C.J. Stroud ‘A Great Role Model’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Faith-filled Super Bowl-winning coach Tony Dungy and Houston Texans quarterback C.J. Stroud recently had a chance to talk together.

At a practice last week, Stroud went through his normal routines as Dungy watched from the sidelines to prepare for his role as an analyst for the Texans and Detroit Lions game.

A video posted to X showed the two having a conversation on the field. Dungy replied to the video, saying, “Yes I was blessed to get to spend a little time with CJ Stroud today at the Texans practice. He is an amazing young man. A tremendous talent but a great role model as well.”

Along with their massive football talent, both Stroud and Dungy share the same passion for proclaiming their faith in Jesus.

Dungy often shares his faith on his social media. In a recent post on X, he shared some thoughts on John 9:13.

The verse reads: “They brought to the Pharisees the man who had been blind.”

“John 9:13. Jesus has just healed a man who had been blind his whole life,” Dungy began. “But the Pharisees aren’t happy because Jesus made a mud ointment on the Sabbath. They considered that ‘work’ so they felt the healing was demonic. But many people disagreed. They knew this was miraculous.”

“When the Pharisees asked the man his opinion he said Jesus must be a prophet,” the coach continued. “But the leaders refused to believe. They asked the man’s parents if he had really been blind then how can he now see? The parents are afraid to say because they don’t want to anger the Pharisees. When the leaders ask the man again about Jesus he simply recounts his experience. Vs 25 is the perfect answer: ‘I don’t know everything but I can tell you I was blind and now I can see.’”

Dungy shared two lessons we can learn from that passage:

1. From the parents-we can’t be afraid to tell the truth about Jesus just because it’s not popular or politically correct.

2. From the man- when giving our testimony we don’t have to know EVERYTHING. We just have to tell people what Jesus has done for US!

Stroud also uses his platform to share the Good News, and he almost always gives God the glory in every post-game interview.

As a “Follower of Christ,” Stroud said that several players in the NFL have reached out to him to thank him for mentioning God and his faith in press conferences.

“I’m not doing it to look cool. I’m doing it because that’s what God called me to do,” he said.
