DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Is One of Marvel’s Most Violent Shows
By Movieguide® Contributor
DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN is making headlines — but not for the right reasons.
With a TV-MA rating, the show is one of the most violent MCU series ever made, according to Total Film. While all superhero movies and shows have their share of action and violence, this is a far cry from your friendly neighborhood SPIDER-MAN.
It’s obvious from the trailer that blood and gore will be plentiful, but the MA rating could also indicate other mature content. Though such a high age rating is uncommon, other MCU shows with TV-MA ratings are IRON FIST Season 1, THE PUNISHER Season 1 and 2 and DAREDEVIL Season 2.
The show premieres on March 4 on Disney+. It features a new villain, Muse, an artist whose favorite medium is his victims’ blood. Charlie Cox stars as Daredevil, Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, Deborah Ann Woll as Karen Page, Elden Henson as Foggy Nelson, Jon Bernthal as Punisher and others.
D’Onofrio recently admitted in an interview: “There’s one thing in particular that my character does that I can’t believe made it into the cut,” he said, referring to a violent act.
“There’s a feeling for those classic ’90s crime tales,” said showrunner Dario Scardapane. “It has a pace and a scope that, for a lot of reasons, Netflix wasn’t able to do. They were very dark, cinematically, not necessarily story-wise, although there were some dark elements. We’re much darker.”

Screen Rant noted the Netflix DAREDEVIL show’s main highlights were its “compelling characters,” writing and pacing, not the violence. But BORN AGAIN is leaning into the violence more heavily.
This is very sad, as DAREDEVIL’s story has plenty of room for redemptive themes and moral and Biblical values that people enjoy seeing. Daredevil’s character is a Christian, and superheroes are widely attractive to people of all ages. This show would appeal to a wider audience if it displayed the right values, but hard-core gore is a narrow window.
Movieguide® gave DAREDEVIL 3.13 “A New Napkin” a -2 rating. While the episode has stellar redemptive dialogue and some good values, it is extremely violent and full of intense language.
