Disney+ bid goodbye to DOCTOR WHO after two lackluster seasons for the famed franchise.

The BBC website states, “With Disney+ confirming they will not be partnering on the next season of the sci-fi show, the BBC remain fully committed to the show and will announce plans for the next series in due course to ensure the Doctor’s adventures continue.”

Director of Drama at BBC Lindsay Salt said in a statement, “We’d like to thank Disney+ for being terrific global partners and collaborators over the past two seasons, and for the upcoming The War Between the Land and the Sea. The BBC remains fully committed to Doctor Who, which continues to be one of our most loved dramas, and we are delighted that Russell T Davies has agreed to write us another spectacular Christmas special for 2026.”

She added, “We can assure fans, the Doctor is not going anywhere, and we will be announcing plans for the next series in due course which will ensure the TARDIS remains at the heart of the BBC.”

The BBC Doctor Who announced the plans to Instagram and received a positive response.

“Gutted we’ll have to wait another year but so glad we’re confirmed back 😭” one person said. Another user added, “JOY 2 THE WORLDDD!!!!🤩😭😍

Although exact reasons for the Disney departure have not been released, the Hollywood reporter noted that “Doctor Who on Disney+ didn’t rise to the level of the streamer’s Star Wars or Marvel franchises, never cracking Nielsen’s list of the top 10 original streaming shows during its run.”

The original DOCTOR WHO began in 1963. Throughout it’s over 60 years on air, the show has had 15 different doctors and dozens of adventures.

Last summer, the show received scrutiny for introducing an LGBT character, which resulted in a drop in ratings. Comic Book News chimed in on the issue, saying “Instead of focusing on a quality story, which Doctor Who is known for, starting with Jodie Whittaker, it became all about the agenda where the series was retconned for DEI and woke purposes to ‘send the message.’”

Movieguide® previously took note of how the poor decision may impact the show’s success. “There is no official confirmation whether the show will be renewed. BBC has a 26-episode contract with Disney, yet it’s only aired 21 episodes. Given the big flop, there’s only a 50/50 chance that it will be renewed.”
