Angel Studios and Wonder Project just gave audiences a first look at upcoming biopic YOUNG WASHINGTON.

“These are not the open battlefields to which you are accustomed,” a young George Washington tells a commanding officer in the clip.

His commander replies, “I have fought in a great many battlefields,” but Washington reminds him, “Not in the New World.”

“You lost in the New World,” his commander tells him. Washington agrees but adds, “Failure is a great teacher.”

YOUNG WASHINGTON, directed by Jon Erwin, tells the story of our first president’s early days.

“I’ve dreamed of telling the powerful origin story of George Washington for nearly a decade. It’s a story of a true pioneer, which makes it the perfect project to partner on with the pioneers at Angel and their world-class distribution network,” Erwin said in a statement about the project. “YOUNG WASHINGTON isn’t just a film — it’s a celebration of the American spirit and the miracle of the forging of our nation.”

Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, CEO of Wonder Project, added, “At Wonder, innovation is at the heart of everything we do — not only in how we tell courageous stories that restore faith in things worth believing in, but also in how we engage with and serve our audience…There hasn’t been a film that I believe has done justice to George Washington’s legacy. This film will change that.”

YOUNG WASHINGTON’s cast includes William Franklyn-Miller as the titular character, along with Mary-Louise Parker, Mia Rodgers, Sir Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis, Joel Smallbone and Jonno Davies.

“With YOUNG WASHINGTON, I am honored to be able to show a modern audience what it felt like to be George Washington during such an early and pivotal time in his life: his ambition, his heartbreak, his failures and the events that drove him to become the revered figure we all know,” Erwin shared in a statement. “William is absolutely the actor to bring this role to life. He’s an incredible talent, and I am ecstatic to have him playing the title character in our film.”

The first trailer for YOUNG WASHINGTON was released last fall, giving viewers “their first real look at the scale, emotion and power” of the project, per a statement from Brandon Purdie, Angel’s head of theatrical distribution and brand development.

“It captures the tension, courage and humanity of a leader whose formative story has rarely been told on screen,” he continued. “We’re honored to bring this epic to theaters for America’s 250th anniversary and thrilled to see audiences already engaging and securing their seats to experience YOUNG WASHINGTON on the biggest screens possible.”

YOUNG WASHINGTON premieres in theaters July 4.
