Angel Studios has announced new details about its upcoming biopic about the nation’s first president, including that the cast will feature Sir Ben Kingsley, Andy Serkis and Joel Smallbone.
“YOUNG WASHINGTON chronicles the origins of America’s first president. After making a tremendous mistake that triggers the French and Indian War, an ambitious 22-year-old George Washington must face his failures and find the courage to become the leader that will forge a nation,” a synopsis for the movie reads via a press release from Angel Studios.
“I’ve dreamed of telling the powerful origin story of George Washington for nearly a decade,” said Jon Erwin, who will serve as a producer on the project. “It’s a story of a true pioneer, which makes it the perfect project to partner on with the pioneers at Angel and their world-class distribution networks. YOUNG WASHINGTON isn’t just a film — it’s a celebration of the American spirit and the miracle of the forging of our nation.”
“With YOUNG WASHINGTON, I am honored to be able to show a modern audience what it felt like to be George Washington during such an early and pivotal time in his life: his ambition, his heartbreak, his failures and the events that drove him to become the revered figure we all know,” he later added.
While tickets for the movie are already on sale — a year in advance of its release — little has been revealed about the project until now. Angel Studios, however, has recently revealed that its main cast will include Kingsley as Robert Dinwiddie, Serkis as General Edward Braddock and Smallbone as William Fairfax. William Franklyn-Miller has already been chosen to play George Washington.

The movie is set to go into production later this year and will release to theaters on July 4, 2026, honoring the 250 year anniversary of the birth of America.
“The next Fourth of July is the 250th anniversary of our nation, and that’s when this movie comes out. We’re inviting you to be a part of this revolution the whole time that we make it,” Erwin said.
“We’re proud to partner with Angel Studios in offering tickets for YOUNG WASHINGTON a full year ahead of its release, giving families and communities across the country the opportunity to come together and experience this powerful celebration of America’s first founder,” added Kelly Merryman Hoogstraten, CEO of Erwin’s Wonder Project studio.
YOUNG WASHINGTON will serve as a perfect movie to release as we reflect on America’s 250-year history next summer.
