Everyone’s Favorite Hero Praises God During Church Worship

By Movieguide® Contributor

If you look closely in the back corner of Harvest Church’s auditorium in Turlock, California, you might see “Spider-Man” lifting his hands in praise during worship.

“Even with a busy schedule saving the world there is STILL time for church ?,” Harvest Youth’s Instagram captioned a video of someone in a Spiderman costume worshipping God in the church auditorium.

“If Spiderman can make it to church you can too!” the caption on the video read.

It’s fitting that Spider-Man would be the superhero to attend church.

Throughout most of the SPIDER-MAN movies and their different versions, Peter Parker presents a “redemptive worldview of being a hero and a role model children can admire.” He starts out as a revengeful teen but grows into a young man who is self-sacrificial — a true hero.

A few times, Parker is filled with rage and hurt and comes close to losing the standard he set for himself — that he won’t take a life. But his motto always shines at the end: “With great power, there must also come great responsibility.”

“Everyone deserves a second chance,” Parker confirms.

Christian author Bobby Angel compares Parker’s walk to Christ’s, whom we should strive to be like.

He says, “As Peter recommits himself to the good that Spider-Man will always work towards, so should we also ‘not grow weary in well-doing’ (Gal 6:9), even in the face of disappointment and failure. Jesus implored us to not despair in the face of the earthly evil we face: ‘I am with you always, to the close of the age’ (Matt. 28:20). …Spider-Man continues to resonate with each new generation because, just as with the Gospel challenge of Christ, we are all called, despite our faults and flaws, to be bringers of the good—to practice great love, coupled with great responsibility.”

Several Spider-Man movies have been selected as one of the Top Ten Best Movies for Mature Audiences at the annual Movieguide® Faith & Values Awards Gala, including THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 1 and 2, SPIDER-MAN 3 and SPIDER-MAN: FAR FROM HOME. Movieguide® chose SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE as one of the Top Ten Movies for Families.

Part of Movieguide®’s review of SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME reads:

SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME is filled with fun surprises and twists, plus lots of action. There’s plenty of serious jeopardy leading to stirring, sad and tearful moments. The performances are perfectly melded with the story’s twists and turns, including some surprise appearances. NO WAY HOME has a strong moral, redemptive premise that everyone deserves a second chance, even supervillains. In the movie, Aunt May inspires Peter to do the right thing and give the supervillains a second chance to set things right. SPIDER-MAN: NO WAY HOME has many light obscenities and profanities, intense action violence and occult content.
