Candace Cameron Bure and Pastor JP Pokluda recently discussed the reality of the spiritual realm and how Christians should think about it.

“A lot of our our Christianity is informed by books and movies outside the scripture, like you think about the movie LEFT BEHIND,” JP Pokluda said on Bure’s podcast.

Earlier in the podcast episode, Bure shared how This Present Darkness by Frank Peretti, a fiction book about the clash between angels and demons and how spiritual warfare impacts our world, was one of the first things to open her eyes to the spiritual realm.

“When I read that book, I was like, ‘Is this how it works?’ Is there really this spiritual realm that we can’t see that’s kind of hovering around us, even walking alongside us, that we don’t know, and is that the same as like creepy things that if we felt like we were in a haunted house or something?” Bure asked.

The actress went on to explain how she has always been fascinated by the spiritual realm but wonders “at what point am I actually dipping into it and opening a door that I’m not supposed to? That’s where those boundaries go up, and I’m like, ‘Okay. It’s real, but I’m not going to dive into it.”

JP Pokluda explained that “there are two mistakes we make about the devils,” referencing something C.S. Lewis said: “One is to give them too much power and authority, like to believe and entrust in them too much, and the other is to deny their existence.”

“I think there’s a third mistake we make in 2025, which is to believe that there are demons but that that belief [has] no implications on how we live and what we do and and how we pursue God,” he added.

The pastor stressed that as Christians, we should be aware of the spiritual realm and the role it plays in our lives, but we don’t “have to operate in fear.”

Instead, “We should operate with an awareness,” he urged listeners.

And while books and movies are a great way to get people interested in the spiritual realm, we should be cross-referencing with what the Bible actually says.

Bure posted a clip of the podcast episode on her Instagram and said, “I believe the spiritual realm (something we can’t necessarily see) is very real. Do You?”

Some of her fans chimed in with their thoughts.

“Absolutely!!!! I’ve felt important people in my life at important times, even after they’ve passed! I truly believe in angels and God!” one person wrote.

Another said, “Yay! People are waking up! It’s more real than our reality here- and it’s eternal!!! Imagine if we all knew our God given authority and destiny and could SEE! How much different we would all live!!”

The spiritual realm is very real, and believers should understand how it impacts their lives, but we don’t have to live in fear. “…the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world,” 1 John 4:4 reminds us.
