We’ve got good news for for KING + COUNTRY fans! DRUMMER BOY! THE MOVIE is now in production.
The movie, a new feature for Angel Studios, is described as an “action-musical from four-time Grammy-winning music group For King and Country which follows two brothers as they find themselves on opposite sides of the American Revolutionary War,” per Variety.
for KING + COUNTRY’s Joel Smallbone leads the cast, alongside Lucas Leach and Beth Easdown. Smallbone and his brother Ben Smallbone direct the screenplay written by Richard L. Ramsey.
“Eight years in the making. A nation built on 250 years of independence. A Christmas story that began over 2,000 years ago,” Joel and Ben said in a statement. “This is the fabric of a film created by brothers, about brothers, and we’re humbled beyond words to bring it to life.”
for KING + COUNTRY celebrated the movie on Instagram.

THE MOVIE is in production,” they wrote alongside a video of Joel in costume. “We’ve been teasing it, and this is your next look do behind the scenes: @joelsmallbone in wardrobe fitting. In another post, they wrote, “Eight years in the making…To say we’re eager to place this film in your hands is an understatement. Thrilled to tell you…DRUMMER BOY! THE MOVIE is officially in production! Would so appreciate your prayers these next few months as we work to bring this film to life We’ll be bringing you on the journey here over the course of the year, but if you want the real inside scoop.. we’ll be peeling back the curtain even more over on @drummerboymovie”
Their fans can’t wait.
“FINALLY. I have been waiting for this since a teaser was show at the concert. I think it was 2019!” one person said.
Another fan commented, “Excited is too mild an adjective. We are super-duper pumped for you Drummer Boy!!!”
This is far from for KING + COUNTRY’s first foray onto the screen. Their most recent project was UNSUNG HERO, which told the Smallbone family’s story about their move from Australia to the United States.
“UNSUNG HERO is a true story about a Christian family from Australia’s struggles to survive and thrive in the rough and tumble music business while trying to serve God,” Movieguide® summarized.
Movieguide®’s review describes it as “a powerful, compelling story of faith and family, told with lots of sincerity and heart. The acting and writing is very good and convincing. UNSUNG HERO has a strong Christian, biblical worldview. The family’s Christian faith is not only clear from their repeated prayers to Jesus to guide and provide for them, but also from their infectious enthusiasm and spiritually uplifting song lyrics.”
Joel won a Movieguide® Grace Prize Award for his role in UNSUNG HERO.
According to Variety, DRUMMER BOY! THE MOVIE began filming in Ireland last month. A release date has not yet been announced.
