Singer-songwriter Nicole C. Mullen says to look towards Jesus’ teachings when it comes to building a relationship with a child who’s been affected by abuse.
“One of the best pieces of advice that I can give in regards to handling or loving on a little one who’s come out of abuse would be kind of what Jesus — what is described about Jesus in the scriptures,” she said during an episode of the “Called to Love” podcast.
Mullen continued, “And it says, ‘He shall lead his flock like a shepherd, He’ll gather the lambs in His arms, and He’ll gently lead those who are with young.’ And so, my point is, that it is going to take patience, it’s going to take gentle care, it’s going to take boundaries, it’s going to take some ‘yes’es and some ‘no’s, it’s going to take consistency in your goodness, and when you get it wrong, coming back and saying, ‘Hey, I was sorry. I shouldn’t have handled it that way. Now, let’s work on moving forward together.’ It’s going to take those types of conversations.”

The two-time-Grammy-nominee has been open about her own experiences with abuse; Mullen spent years in an abusive marriage that ended when she escaped in the middle of the night.
In an interview with Crosswalk, Mullen shared her advice for women who are in similar situations.
“I would want to say that first of all, God sees you, He knows you, He hears you and He cares,” she said. “He’s proven that all throughout the scripture, He also proves it in real time. Everyday lives of people like me, and he wants to show it to you as well.”
She continued, “My encouragement to you would be, first of all, calling Him before you call anyone else. You might have to call 9-1-1, but before you even call 9-1-1, cry out to Him first and then allow Him to give you wisdom to download into your spirit what it is that you need to do. I promise He will comfort. He will lead, He will guide, He will provide, He will protect you. He will help you. He will deliver. He will rescue and He will redeem you. I’m proof of it.”
Mullen also tackles the topic in her 2025 book, It’s Never Wrong to Do the Right Thing.
“I haven’t always made wise or courageous decisions,” she said in a statement about the book. “But God is a redeemer who works all things for our good. It’s a privilege to share my own story alongside those of faithful heroes and heroes who have encouraged me through the years. I hope readers find their hearts strengthened to help them take a courageous step toward God’s best.”
Mullen’s relationship with God saw her through dark times. Now, she’s pointing others towards faith as they face their own problems.
