How This FULL HOUSE Star Learned to Give Without Expectation

Actress Candace Cameron Bure is sharing an important lesson on giving without expectation.

“My husband taught me the biggest lesson because there was a friend that asked for some money, and I was the person that went yeah, we could give it to him, but I don’t think he’s going to pay us back,” Bure recalled on her podcast recently.

“We had prayed about it, and then my husband was like, ‘I don’t want it back, and if we ever give anything to anyone, even if they ask us for it, I want to give with no expectation. We’re never going to lend money to anyone if we decide we’re going to give money to someone’ and that’s changed my life,” Bure said. “It’s a very different thing to give without expectation.”

Bure shared earlier this year that there are more ways to be generous without expectation.

The Teddy Bear Award® winner said, “We usually always put generosity into the ‘money or things’ category…as in, that’s the only way you can TRULY be generous. But really generosity is so much more than money and belongings.”

“We can be generous with our thoughts, words, time, influence, and attention too! When we take the time to notice a stranger, spend time helping others, or even give our friends the support they need — we are being generous! ?”

Bure previously shared generosity with her time when she spent a day farming with The Salvation Army. She served at its Bell Shelter alongside GrowGood culinary students in 2017. The organization helps residents learn how to grow food and cook it while providing workplace training. Residents receive job placement at the end of their program.

“It’s been really eye-opening, because you see people who face everyday challenges, and it’s hard for them to get out of their circumstances,” she said. “So many people today are faced with multiple daily challenges that make it hard for them to make ends meet. They’re deciding between things like paying electric bills to keep the power on or medical bills to keep their children healthy. That’s why I feel blessed to be in a position where I can shine a light on the many unique ways that The Salvation Army is helping give people hope and a second chance at living.”

“My mom and dad always [gave back]. They really instilled that into my heart, as well as my brother and sisters, and I’ve carried that with me as an adult,” she continued. “So that’s why I’m here. I can’t imagine, with so much that I do have and am blessed with, not giving back. That’s what I’m called to do … It’s so easy to do, and it makes a world of difference.”
