Korn’s Brian “Head” Welch is sharing the moment he surrendered his life to Jesus, overcoming a serious drug addiction.

“I got to this point where I was on [this] two-year binge and I wanted to get clean. Talked to couple out-patient rehab places,” Welch explained on an episode of TBN’s PRAISE. “I wasn’t given a lot of hope.”

He added, “I [was] a shell, walking around with nothing of substance inside and I [had] all kinds of money in the bank, but I just [didn’t] want to wake up when I go to sleep.”

While he was struggling to overcome his addictions, Welch happened to start getting into real estate. He bought some property with a group who “were actually Christians.”

“They ended up just talking to me, and they invited me to go to church one day and I’m like —  ‘You know, I used to mock it growing up’ — but I did ask Christ into my heart when I was 12…so I held onto that when they asked me to come to church.”

Welch continued, “I get there, and I hear about this Jesus Christ who’s real. The son of God [who] was here and died on the cross and raised from the dead and would come to live inside of us, but I’m having a hard time wrapping my head around it.”

“I started thinking back when I asked Christ into my heart and maybe that was where my journey went the wrong way…maybe that’s where I went off track,” he shared. “I went home, and I started praying to God like I had been a Christian for 20 years.”

Welch often speaks about the impact his faith had on his efforts to conquer his addictions.

“I never said I was sober,” he said during a presentation at Legacy Church. “I am high on the most high. He’s poured his love into my heart by the Holy Spirit. I traded in my ashes for beauty. I traded in my addictions for relationships, for love.”

He has also addressed anyone who has questions about how a hard-partying rocker found faith.

“I think people see that this is genuine,” he told Evangelical Focus. “I hope they see that I’m authentic, that my faith is deep. That my love and respect for people is genuine and strong. I hope they see that I’m really walking this out, that this is something firm and secure.”
