Marvel Wants Russo Brothers to Direct Next Two AVENGERS Movies
By Movieguide® Contributor
Marvel is getting back in the ring with more AVENGERS movies, and the studio is tapping Joe and Anthony Russo to lead the next flicks.
A source told Deadline, “Joe and Anthony Russo are being brought into the fold at Marvel Studios on various fronts with one of their first big priorities being the upcoming AVENGERS sequels at the studio. Talks for the pair to direct those films are still in early stages, but the plan would be for them to be involved in both films.”
The brothers would likely be directing the fifth AVENGERS film — previously AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY but currently untitled — and AVENGERS: SECRET WARS.
“The move also marks a homecoming for the Russos, who jumped from the world of TV comedy on shows like ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT and COMMUNITY to blockbuster movies a decade ago, with CAPTAIN AMERICAN: THE WINTER SOLDIER (2014). In total, they directed four of Marvel’s biggest and best regarded movies, going on to helm CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR (2016), AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR (2018) and AVENGERS: ENDGAME (2019). Combined, their Marvel films grossed $6.681 billion, with ENDGAME standing as the No. 2 movie of all time globally with $2.79 billion,” the Hollywood Reporter wrote.
There has yet to be a comment from the Russos.
The fifth AVENGERS movie is slated for a May 1, 2026, release. However, it’s had a tumultuous preproduction process.
Originally Jonathan Majors was set to star “as time-traveling villain Kang. But Marvel cut ties with the actor after he was convicted of assault and harassment in December. SHANG-CHI AND THE LEGEND OF THE TEN RINGS director Destin Daniel Cretton was once attached to direct KANG DYNASTY, but he departed a month before Majors’ conviction. The feature is expected to get a new name and a new focus,” the Hollywood Reporter explained.
AVENGERS: SECRET WARS is aiming to hit theaters May 7, 2027. This film will follow the “1980s comic book series focused on an all powerful antagonist known as the Beyonder, who in the first installment pitted Marvel’s heroes and villains against each other on a planet known as Battleworld.”
Movieguide® previously reported on Joe Russo’s thoughts about “superhero fatigue”:
While nearly every Marvel movie to release in recent years has flopped, Joe Russo doesn’t believe “superhero fatigue” is to blame. He thinks the lackluster performances reflect a larger industry issue.
“I think it’s a reflection of the current state of everything,” Russo, who was responsible for superhero hits like CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and AVENGERS: ENDGAME, told GamesRadar+. “It’s difficult right now, it’s an interesting time. I think we’re in a transitional period and people don’t know quite yet how they’re going to receive stories moving forward, or what kinds of stories they’re going to want.”
“There’s a big generational divide about how you consume media. There’s a generation that’s used to appointment viewing and going to a theater on a certain date to see something, but it’s aging out. Meanwhile the new generation are ‘I want it now, I want to process it now,’ then moving onto the next thing, which they process whilst doing two other things at the same time,” he continued.
