Masked DJ Marshmello is officially joining the cast of Paramount’s SMURFS.
“When Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is mysteriously taken by evil wizards, Razamel and Gargamel, Smurfette (Rihanna) leads the Smurfs on a mission into the real world to save him,” a synopsis of the movie reads. “With the help of new friends, the Smurfs must discover what defines their destiny to save the universe.”
The Hollywood Reporter added that SMURFS is a “comedic, musical adventure ‘that sets out to answer one of life’s biggest questions: What is a Smurf?’”
It’s unclear what Marshmello’s role will be in the live-action animated hybrid, but fans of the DJ are excited to get a rare listen of the artist’s voice.
Even though his voice isn’t often heard, people around the world are familiar with Marshmello’s work. The DJ has collaborated with stars like Selena Gomez, Halsey, Demi Lovato and the Jonas Brothers, racking up more than 16.8 billion streams on Spotify, per Variety.
Marshmello isn’t the only musical artist taking part in SMURFS. Rihanna is set to have a song on the movie’s soundtrack, her first music release since 2022’s “Lift Me Up” from BLACK PANTHER: WAKANDA FOREVER’s soundtrack.
The song is titled “Friend of Mine.” Other artists confirmed to be on the soundtrack for SMURFS include Tyla, DJ Khaled and Cardi B.
“I hope this gives me cool points with my kids one day,” Rihanna said of her role in SMURFS during an appearance at this year’s CinemaCon.
In addition to Marshmello, Goodman and Rihanna, James Corden, Nick Offerman, JP Karliak, Daniel Levy, Amy Sedaris, Natasha Lyonne, Sandra Oh, Octavia Spencer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Waddingham, Alex Winter, Maya Erskine, Billie Lourd, Xolo Maridueña and Kurt Russell are also part of the SMURFS cast.
Chris Miller is directing the project. His previous credits include SHREK THE THIRD and PUSS IN BOOTS, for which he received his first Academy Award nomination.
The SMURFS Instagram account recently announced the movie’s release date: “Adventure comes out of the blue. Check out the new poster for #SmurfsMovie – Only in theatres July 18.”
This isn’t the first time the popular cartoon has been turned into a movie. In 2011, Sony released THE SMURFS, followed by THE SMURFS 2 and SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE.
Fans of THE SMURFS are excited to see this newest iteration of the beloved franchise — and can’t wait to see what this star-studded cast brings to the table.
