HGTV star Mina Starsiak Hawk recently shared that she’s in a “good place” with her mother almost two years after their rift.
“It took us a lot of time to get there,” she told PEOPLE of her relationship with her mom, Karen E. Laine. “So I think it takes a lot of time to kind of get out of it as well.”
Hawk added, “We were all together for the holidays, so we’re all amicable. We’re not like best friends that braid each other’s hair on Saturday nights or anything, but no, it’s good.”

Hawk and Laine worked together on GOOD BONES, which came to an end in 2023. Later that year, Hawk was candid about her family issues in an episode of her podcast, “Mina AF.”
“My mom and I aren’t in a great place,” she admitted. “My brother Tad and I aren’t in a great place. My brother William and I are in a kind of like nonexistent place. It’s complicated without even being complicated. We don’t really engage much and the last engagement wasn’t super positive, and that was maybe a year ago.”
Hawk said they “always coexist,” even going on family vacations together, as they all want to “come together for the things that are important to my dad.”
In an interview with PEOPLE following the podcast episode comments, the HGTV star reflected on the difficulties of working with Laine on GOOD BONES’ final season.
“There were definitely some challenging [moments] because my mom and I were in some of the most challenging places I felt we’ve been,” Hawk explained, adding that during filming of the season’s premiere, the pair had just had “a knockdown drag-out [fight] during demo.”
She said, “I was like, ‘I wonder if anyone’s going to be able to tell.’ And of course, you can’t because that’s the idea. People…that’s not why they’re tuning in to watch GOOD BONES. That’s not what they want.”
Hawk might have said goodbye to GOOD BONES, but she hasn’t hung up her tool belt just yet. She’s set to appear in the upcoming season of ROCK THE BLOCK, where HGTV stars are paired up with celebrity contestants. Hawk’s partner? Former NFL star and Super Bowl champ Vernon Davis.
“There was so much shenanigans because we all had so much fun with each other,” she said of working on the new season. “The teams [were] just messing with each other. There’s several instances where Vernon, my partner, who’s a giant ex NFL player, would just physically move someone that he didn’t want where they were. Just always messing with each other and playing around.”
While Hawk and Laine’s relationship isn’t completely healed, GOOD BONES fans are happy to hear that the mother and daughter are on the road to reconciliation.
