MINIONS 3 Gets Release Date as Franchise Hits Massive Milestone
By Movieguide® Contributor
A new MINIONS movie is in the works! The Illumination sequel MINIONS 3 is set to come out June 30, 2027.
The film will be written by Brian Lynch and directed by Pierre Coffin, who also voices the minions.
The DESPICABLE ME and MINIONS franchise is the highest-grossing franchise in animation history, earning around $5 billion throughout its six-movie run.
The latest installment, DESPICABLE ME 4, proves that fans still love the franchise.
“DESPICABLE ME 4 loomed large at the international box office, earning a mighty $88 million to top charts. The animated sequel’s global haul now stands at $437.8 million,” Variety reported. “The DESPICABLE ME series of movies became the first animated franchise in history to cross the $5 billion mark.”
Part of Movieguide®’s review for DESPICABLE ME 4 reads:
DESPICABLE ME 4 is often hilarious. It focuses a lot on the comical chaos that the minions bring. DESPICABLE ME 4 has a strong moral, pro-family worldview. Gru protects his family and must save his son from the villain. Also, little Agnes refuses to tell a lie. However, much of the humor focuses on the comical slapstick chaos that the minions cause. So, MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.
Other installments have made a splash at the box office. Variety reported, “2022’s MINIONS: THE RISE OF GRU topped the global box office in its opening weekend and shattered records for the July 4 holiday with a $125 million domestic haul. DESPICABLE ME 4 tallied just shy of that number, with an impressive $122.6 million domestic debut, and is expected to top the charts again in its second week of release, earning more than $30 million.”
Movieguide®’s synopsis of THE RISE OF GRU reads:
In the movie, Gru is a boy who longs to be a supervillain. Gru wants to join the Vicious 6, but they tease him because of his young age. So, he steals the Zodiac Stone from them. Furious, they chase after him, but Gru gives the stone to a minion, who loses it. Will Gru find the missing stone, or will the Vicious 6 destroy him?”
However, Movieguide® cautions against its “Mixed pagan worldview with New Age elements.”
Several films in the franchise have won Movieguide® awards, thanks to their redemptive storylines. Movieguide® said, “DESPICABLE ME and DESPICABLE ME 2 were nominated for Movieguide® Awards in the Best Movies for Families category both in 2010 and 2013. However, MINIONS did not have a strong/redemptive angle, and Movieguide® recommended extreme caution for that movie.”
It remains to be seen whether MINIONS 3 will follow the redemptive angle of the DESPICABLE ME movies or if it will fall into the mixed worldview that marred the other MINIONS films.
