Movie with Pro-Life Message Rocked the Streaming Charts

By Movieguide® Contributor

Netflix original, CARRY ON, dominated the streaming charts in the U.S. from Dec. 16-22.

The thriller is about a TSA agent, Ethan Kopek, who’s faced with difficult choices as he tries to protect innocent lives — including his pregnant girlfriend’s. It had over 1.92 billion viewing minutes in its first week, per Deadline. That’s the second-best performance for a Netflix movie in 2024.

The movie had 97 million views in the first 10 days and is Netflix’s fifth most popular movie of all time, per JoBlo. It also was in Netflix’s Top 10 in 92 countries and received an 85% Rotten Tomatoes score.

The movie has a strong pro-life message as significance is given to Ethan’s unborn child multiple times. Ethan also cares about saving everyone’s lives.

Movieguide®’s review reads:

Director Jaume Collet-Serra directed some of Liam Neeson’s best action movies. He brings his impressive skills to the table. He’s created a movie that moves ultra-fast, with lots of exiting suspense. CARRY-ON has strong performances by its three leads and a deep bench in its supporting cast. The movie takes place on Christmas Eve in a packed airport. So, it’s a great homage to the first two DIE HARD movies but stands on its own as one of the best thrillers in recent years. CARRY-ON has a clearly defined hero and villain, giving it strong moral clarity. However, it has many obscenities, three strong profanities and a live-in pregnant girlfriend. So, Movieguide® advises extreme caution.

Dominant Worldview and Other Worldview Content/Elements: Strong moral, pro-life worldview, with light redemptive elements, of a hero risking his life to save thousands of others, marred slightly by him cohabiting with his pregnant girlfriend (although no sex is shown), plus two supporting male characters are “married.”

Director Jaume Collet-Serra said he was drawn to CARRY ON because of  “the concept that the main character has to do nothing to save his loved one. Normally, like they put your loved one in danger, and they say, ‘Go do this.’ In this case, your job really is so simple. He can just let him go through with the simplest of actions. It’s just not…pushing the button. That, to me, was very relatable.”

Though CARRY ON is a smashing success for Netflix, Screen Rant asserts that there’s no news of a sequel.

Prime’s RED ONE was also in the top five most-streamed movies, as were VIRGIN RIVER (for top five series), LA PALMA and BLUEY. THE EQUALIZER came in as No. 6.
