Nate Bargatze On His Comedy: ‘I Started Clean And Stayed Clean’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Grammy-nominated clean comedian Nate Bargatze is getting ready to host SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE!

“It was pretty crazy,” he said of getting the call asking him to host the iconic comedy show. “It’s something you don’t even think that you could ever do. You want to do it, but then it’s like…you’re just a dude from Tennessee! So I was blown away.”

Bargatze shared that he’s “very excited” about performing his opening monologue and is willing to “trust” the SNL cast when it comes to sketches.

The comedian celebrated the milestone in an Instagram post, writing, “Beyond a dream come true. Thank you!!!!”

He also spoke about his commitment to being a clean comedian.

“I’ve done it since the beginning,” Bargatze said. “I just never wanted my parents to get mad at me. I always started clean [and] stayed clean.”

The stand-up comedian elaborated on that desire to keep his material family-friendly in an interview with Fox News.

“I just can’t imagine cursing in front of your parents,” he shared. “Still, even now, I’m 43-years-old and I still just couldn’t do that. So that’s how I write. I think I write my comedy to — a lot of it is to make my parents laugh. I want them to be proud and be like, ‘Oh, come watch my son do comedy,’ and not be offended by it. I just don’t have that in me to want to offend someone or make someone feel bad.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Bargatze’s commitment to keeping his material clean:

Bargatze keeps his stand-up material clean because he still feels like he would “get in trouble” with his parents if they heard him telling a dirty joke.

“I don’t want to disappoint my parents,” Bargatze went on, saying he would also feel “mortified” and “very uncomfortable” using inappropriate material in front of them.

Bargatze also said his Christian upbringing has contributed to his commitment to staying clean onstage.

“I grew up that way,” Bargatze explained. “I come from a Christian family and Southern Christian, so I wasn’t allowed to watch anything, which I talk about in the special. And so growing up and only watching clean comedians, it was just how I was going to be. And it would feel forced if I was not.”
