NBC Airing ‘Profane Use of God’s Name’ Sparks Protest

By Movieguide® Contributor

In an episode of DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND, a contestant repeatedly took God’s name in vain. Now a conservative activist group is protesting against NBC for leaving the comments uncensored.

The Jan. 23 broadcast of the show aired with several curse words censored out but not the ones using God’s name in vain.

“Many of our supporters have submitted complaints on this serious issue of NBC censoring most profanity but not censoring the profane use of God’s name,” said the conservative group, One Million Moms.

“No other religion would tolerate such blatant blasphemy, and Christians will not either,” the statement continued. “As stated in the Ten Commandments, God clearly prohibits the use of His name in vain. The Ten Commandments are there for believers to live by since God knows what is best.”

The group asks that NBC censor out God’s name with the other curses. It’s requesting Christians to ask CBS the same.

“Mocking God is extremely disrespectful to Christians, and NBC needs to be held accountable!” One Million Moms said.

The group said NBC is “also irresponsible because children are likely watching during the show’s prime time airing, and children repeat what they hear.”

As of Sunday, the petition against NBC has over 13,500 signatures. It states, “As a Christian, I am highly offended that NBC network chooses not to censor the repeated profane use of God’s name.”

DEAL OR NO DEAL ISLAND is an exciting game show. Its contestants must form alliances and compete in mental and physical challenges over high stakes. Cursing aside, it has a lot of potential to be family-friendly entertainment.

But Hollywood’s disregard for Christian values isn’t surprising. Movieguide® previously reported about the language in THE BATMAN:

Variety reported: “Sources close to the film say ‘The Batman,’ which is grounded more in reality than recent DC adaptations, was able to nab a PG-13 rather than an R-rating because it doesn’t have excessive foul language or nudity…”

Despite the lack of excessive f-bombs and nudity, THE BATMAN’s push for a PG-13 rating puts Hollywood’s disregard for God and the Christian audience on full display with excessive use of God and Jesus’ name as substitutionary, “less offensive” curse words.

As Movieguide®’s review points out, there are over 35 uses of “strong profanities” in THE BATMAN.

Stories can be told without all of this cursing. Using God’s name in vain doesn’t add to the entertainment value, whether it’s reality TV, movie, series or play.

Across the board, the entertainment industry would benefit from more views, tickets and better ratings if it would only think about who’s watching the content it’s putting out.
