Netflix will blast off with some exciting new content: livestreaming rocket launches in partnership with NASA.

“Netflix is teaming up with NASA to bring space a little closer to home! Beginning this summer, Netflix will begin to stream live rocket launches, astronaut spacewalks, mission coverage, and breathtaking live views of earth from the international space station,” Netflix and NASA announced on Instagram earlier this week.

People in the comment section shared their excitement for the new content.

“NASA also has loads of amazing stuff on their NASA+ app, as well as live streams on YouTube and Twitch! 💜 Awesome to see them continuing to make space accessible for everyone! Ily NASA 🥰” one user said. Another person added, “Amazing. We need more science in these times!”

“Through this partnership, NASA’s work in science and exploration will become even more accessible, allowing the agency to increase engagement with and inspire a global audience in a modern media landscape, where Netflix reaches a global audience of more than 700 million people,” a press release reads.

This move is more than just a push to boost Netflix subscribers. For NASA, streaming on the platform, along with its NASA+ streamer, fulfills a promise it made over 50 years ago.

“The National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 calls on us to share our story of space exploration with the broadest possible audience,” Rebecca Sirmons, general manager of NASA+, explained.

NASA+ is completely free, and the platform features numerous educational videos about space-related topics.

This isn’t the first time Netflix has streamed live content. Last Christmas, the streaming giant hosted live NFL games on Christmas Day, as well as the live boxing match between Jake Paul and Mike Tyson.

Netflix also recently cut a deal with France’s TF1 Group to bring its channels to viewers on the platform.

This is a first-of-its-kind partnership that plays to our strengths of giving audiences the best entertainment alongside the best discovery experience, said Greg Peters, co-CEO of Netflix. “By teaming up with France’s leading broadcaster we will provide French consumers with even more reasons to come to Netflix every day and to stay with us for all their entertainment.

Netflix remains a top streamer, following YouTube, and it makes sense why.

Despite price hikes, the streamer adds interesting content and keeps things fresh. In May, Netflix pulled 7.5% of all streaming viewership, per Nielsen’s The Gauge. Disney follows at 5%.

Live streaming of NASA on Netflix is set to begin this summer.
