Prime Acquires THE BAXTERS Series, Starring Roma Downey

By Movieguide® Contributor

Prime Video just announced its new spring release—THE BAXTERS.

“The series stars and is executive produced by actress, producer, and New York Times best-selling author Roma Downey as the family matriarch, Elizabeth Baxter,” Patheos reported. “Also starring is Ted McGinley (SHRINKING, MARRIED…WITH CHILDREN) as John Baxter. THE BAXTERS is slated to stream spring 2024 exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide.”

“The deal with Prime Video comes as Amazon has heightened its focus on faith-based, family-friendly, and uplifting series and movies,” Variety reported.

The series is based on Karen Kingsbury’s best-selling series that follows the lives of Elizabeth and John Baxter and their five adult children.

“In this deeply moving faith-based journey, The Baxters must come together as a family to work through the challenges of life,” Patheos reported.

Ali Cobrin, Masey McLain, Josh Plasse, Cassidy Gifford, Reilly Anspaugh, Emily Peterson and Brandon Hirsch will also star in the drama.

In a press release, Kingsbury and Downey both shared that they are very pleased that the series will stream on Prime.

Prime acquired the show from LightWorkers Media, Downey’s production company. Movieguide® previously reported how Downey created LightWorkers Media:

Downey’s breakout role came in TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL, a hit TV show that ran for a decade during the ‘90s and early 2000s. In this role, Downey embraced her faith—something she realizes not all actors get to do.

When the show ended, Downey began to wonder what was next. The actress was offered roles she didn’t care for, and she wasn’t even sure if she wanted to stay in entertainment. However, she felt God tug on her heart and created Lightworkers Media.

“There is a saying that ‘it’s better to light a candle than to curse the darkness,’” Downey told Jesus Calling. “And we really believe that at Lightworkers. You know, there are a lot of bad things happening in the world. Of course, there are…We’re committed to reminding people that there is goodness in the world, that there are good people, and that there is light. That is the light. And that, of course, God is the light. We’re just the workers.”
