Originally penned by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight in the 1950s, the books follow Eloise, “a self-assured child who lives in a luxurious hotel in New York, The Plaza.”

“She is looked after by her British nurse, Nanny, and has two beloved pets: a dog named Weenie and a turtle, Skipperdee, for whom she calls room service and orders ‘one roast-beef bone, one raisin and seven spoons’ and insists that they ‘charge it please!’ She has her own language with endless monologues, and a rawther enormous imagination. She’s the uninvited guest at all functions, a terror to mail carriers, and the unessential little helper to the entire hotel staff. If something is amiss, Eloise usually has a hand in it,” a description of the character reads.

“Eloise has been beloved for generations, from when she was first published in the 1950s through to today, when no family trip to New York City is complete without a stop at The Plaza,” Hannah Minghella, Head of Feature Animation and Family Film at Netflix, said in a press release. “It’s an honor to reintroduce this cherished character to the world with two people who share her signature mischief and charm — Amy Sherman-Palladino and Ryan Reynolds — in this bold, hilarious, and heartfelt new family film.”

Independent film and TV studio MRC, which acquired Eloise in 2019, will oversee the film’s production and collaborate with Thompson’s estate and Knight, now 99 years old, throughout the filming process.

“We’ve been working with the Thompson estate and Handmade Films for a long time to bring ELOISE to fans everywhere, and we’re thrilled to be partnering with Maximum Effort, Amy, and Netflix to bring the cherished children’s property to audiences around the world,” MRC Film co-presidents Jonathan Golfman and Brye Adler said.

Sherman-Palladino co-wrote the script with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton. Reynolds, George Dewey, Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau will produce for Maximum Effort. Woolverton also produces, alongside Molly Milstein executive producing for Maximum Effort.

Fans of the iconic character can’t wait to see what Netflix has planned for the ELOISE movie.
