Sadie Robertson Huff on Avoiding Gossip: How We ‘Speak About People Matters’

Sadie Robertson Huff and her husband Christian shared how to avoid gossip on the “WHOA That’s Good” podcast.

“I love this question mainly because I think, one, you have to realize that gossip is a sin, and it is a problem, and I think because gossip is something that is so common and so casually done, sometimes we don’t think about the weightiness of it and the effects that it really has, but gossip can be detrimental” Sadie began.

She added, “So, one, I love that you even are seeking to change. Two, I love that you said kindly remove yourself from it because I do think that there is a way to remove yourself kindly. It doesn’t need to shame anyone else in the room when you remove yourself from a conversation like that.”

Paul reminds the church of Ephesus to speak words of encouragement to others rather than gossiping. Ephesians 4:29 reads, “Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.”

Sadie added that Christian is “really good” at shutting down gossip.

“I think that you’re really good at this,” she said of her husband. “I’ve seen you walk away from conversations of gossip or shut them down, and I think that that takes a lot of confidence to do.”

“Then also I think one way of…just avoiding it is just being sensitive to it and…allowing your sensitivity and your conviction of it… give you the confidence to actually speak up,” she continued.

Sadie added that it is important to “be sensitive to people that aren’t in the room.”

“You might be thinking this is way too strict, but I think just like your sensitivity towards the way you speak about people [matters],” she said. “You know, your tongue holds a lot of power. It holds the power of life and death, and the way we speak about people matters.”

She’s also recently opened up about how she deals with anxiety.

“I used to live in this kind of extreme anxiety,” Sadie posted. But, “Gods word says that He didn’t give us a spirit of fear BUT one of power, love and a sound mind! It also says He gives PEACE that surpasses ALL understanding.”

“Don’t let your anxieties simmer in your mind until they boil over friends,” she added.

While answering fan questions on an episode of her podcast, Sadie Robertson Huff explained how she addresses her anxiety head-on.

“I’ve deleted social media. I have talked to a counselor. I have talked to two mentors. I have talked to [her husband Christian],” she said. “I do not get passive with anxiety. I do not get passive with struggling with that. I’m like, nope. I have a sound mind. I am not going to sit here and try to go about my life while I’m being super anxious and overwhelmed by stress.”

“Like I said, I gotta show up, like, I gotta host this podcast, I gotta be a good wife, I gotta be a good mom. And so, like, I’m not just gonna sit here and let my mind be riddled with anxiety,” Huff continued. “I gotta speak truth over myself. I gotta get out whatever is making me anxious. I gotta talk to someone. Because I’m just not gonna do it. And so, I think you gotta get serious about it too, don’t just be like, ‘Oh, I have so much anxiety,’ like work through it.”
