Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley revealed he has surrendered his life to Jesus.
In a recent conversation with YouTube golf influencer Grant Horvat, Barkley asked Horvat, “You’re big in your faith, right?”
“I am Christian, yes. Very big in my faith,” Horvate replied.
Barkley then shared that he “just became a Christian not too long ago.”
Horvat went on to explain how grateful he is to share his faith through his YouTube channel “with people that may be struggling in their life and they don’t know which direction to go.”
“Exactly,” Barkley agreed. “I feel like that for me. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the best year I had in my career, I found my faith. It gives me some clarity in life.”
Barkley just came off a Super Bowl win, and he secured 2,000 rushing yards last season. Though he doesn’t know much about the Bible yet, he’s learning.
“I’m not going to sit here and tell you I know the Bible in and out,” Barkley said. “It’s something I’m learning. I’m challenging myself to get better at it with my family and friends. I’m really lucky to have my agent — he’s a pastor — and I’m able to have Bible studies with him.”
“But I’m just growing,” the Super Bowl champion continued. “And I think that’s the beautiful thing about it. I think that’s what faith is — having a relationship with God and understanding who Jesus is. And that’s what I’ve been trying to do this year.”
After Barkley and the Eagles won the Super Bowl, he wrote on Instagram, “It’s safe to say that I’ma take the cake for this year I would say try again next year. But next year will probably be my best year… GOD IS GREAT 🖤🖤.”
Aside from being one of the best running backs in the NFL, Barkley is also a father of two: Jada, 6, and Saquon Jr., 2. Before each game, Barkley and his two kids share special handshakes.
“Me and my daughter have had a handshake for a very long time,” the athlete told PEOPLE. “It’s just, when you’re winning games or you’re playing well, cameras are always on you, so that’s where that one comes from.”
“And then I got a new one with my son who’s 2,” he continued. “Have you ever seen [Disney’s FINDING NEMO], and when [they] do like the fin, noggin, dude? That’s [where our] shake comes from.”
Barkley just came off one of the best years he’s ever had, and he knows it’s all thanks to God. He is ready for what God will do for him in this upcoming season.
