Saints LB Leads Players in On-Field Prayer

Saints LB Leads Players in On-Field Prayer

By Movieguide® Contributor

This season hasn’t been what New Orleans Saints linebacker Demario Davis expected, but he’s leaning on his faith for strength.

“The five-time All-Pro linebacker’s 13-year streak of games played is coming to an end after he suffered a hamstring injury last week against the Philadelphia Eagles. So the Saints will kick off with the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday without him for the first time since he signed with the team,” Saints Wire reported.

Since he signed with the Saints, Davis has played “197 consecutive regular season games, starting the last 101 of them.”

Amid the injury and heartbreak, the linebacker has leaned on his faith even more.

In a photo shared on his Instagram before the game, Davis kneels and holds hands in prayer with fellow players and coaches from the Saints and the Houston Texans.

“Sometimes prayer is all you have. Sometime it’s all you need,” he wrote in the caption. He’s sure to continue to rely on God as he recovers.

If it were up to Davis, he would probably play through the injury, but head coach Dennis Allen doesn’t want to take that risk.

“We’re not gonna put anybody out there that we feel like we’re putting at risk of injuring themselves,” Allen told the NFL media. “Nobody, especially guys like that…We had to do that same thing with Cam [Jordan] at one point in time. With all these things, you’re always just looking at what’s the proper thing to do, what’s the right thing to do for the player and for the team. That’s all that goes into any of those type of decisions.”

The hope is for Davis to focus on his recovery and get back to the field as soon as possible. Willie Gay Jr., who is starting his fourth season in the NFL, will fill in for Davis.

Movieguide® previously reported on a worship event hosted by Davis and teammate Derek Carr:

Davis emphasized that the worship event was for anyone, whether they had a strong faith or had never heard the Gospel before.

“Some of us came in, our faith was full and all we wanted to do was give all of our praise to the Lord,” he said. “Some of us came in and our faith was strong, but we needed something to pick us up because we were going through hard times. Some of us came in with an understanding of who Jesus is or had heard about Him, but don’t know Him for ourselves, but we’ve gotten a chance to know Him tonight.

“And some of us are in that place that all of us will experience through life, to where our faith has been shaken,” he added. “And we believe that God can answer, but we just don’t see how it’s possible. But we just sang about the King of Kings, and you’re here in this moment because there is a way. The Bible says, ‘We walk by faith, and not by sight,’ so you don’t have to see the way out, but He’ll answer.”
