Savannah Guthrie on New Book: ‘I Had Something Good to Say About God’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Savannah Guthrie recently shared why she felt called to write her most recent book, “Mostly What God Does.”

“My faith is really important to me,” she said while appearing on THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT. “It’s something that really thrills me and excites me, and I’m passionate about it.”

When asked why she decided to write a book about her faith, Guthrie explained, “I felt like I had something good to say about God, and I just wanted to say it.”

“So many of us, we ask ourselves, ‘Am I a good person? Have I made bad decisions? Is God the scolding father figure?’ The God that I know, that I think exists, is the one that loves us in spite of all that,” she continued.

Guthrie stressed that she is not “a theologian” or “biblical scholar” but added, “What I learned about God happened mostly when I made mistakes…not being some great success, and certainly no model or example of piety.”

While speaking about “Mostly What God Does” at a stop on her book tour, Guthrie shared how her faith has comforted her over the years.

“Year after year in my darkest times, believing in God, and believing in a God who has a better world in mind, knowing that there is a plan,” she said. “It helps me contend with the ordinary heartbreaks of everyday life, the ones I experience, and the ones I bear witness to in this job.”

In another interview, Guthrie shared, “This book is a series of reflections about faith, and it’s from the heart. It’s really vulnerable and personal. And it’s that way because, in so many ways, this is the book that I need to read…I need to be reminded, like we all do, that God loves us and is on our side and has an eternal promise to be present to us. It’s not a promise that everything’s going to work out our way, or on our timing, or that we’re just going to crush life. It’s simply a promise that I am here for you. And I’m here with you.”

Movieguide® previously reported on Guthrie’s book:

THE TODAY SHOW host Savannah Guthrie announced that she has been working on a new faith-based book, “Mostly What God Does.”

“I’m so passionate about faith, how it can challenge us and inspire us, and it is at the heart of a new project that I am excited to reveal right now,” Guthrie said. “I’ve decided to share a book. It’s called ‘Mostly What God Does’ because mostly what God does is love you.”

“It’s just a bunch of reflections on faith and love and kindness and goodness,” she added. “It’s very personal, which is why I’m in tears about is, but also really overjoyed and delighted, but scared because it’s certainly the most personal and vulnerable thing I’ve ever done. But also a joy because I’m really passionate about this, and I hope it will be full of love and happiness for everyone.”
