Actor Scott Foley loved sharing the simple and relatable story of Malcolm, a widowed father and pastor, in IT’S NOT LIKE THAT.

“You know, look, I think this show does a really good job of managing really relatable situations and emotions,” Foley told Movieguide® on the red carpet of the series premiere. “And that’s hard to do. You know, the writing about the human condition is endless, but doing it in a simple, good way is really hard to do. And that’s what attracted me to this show: the simple story. It’s the kinda show I like to be a part of and, and to watch.”

The series follows Pastor Malcolm Jeffries after his wife, Jenny, dies. The pastor “struggles to raise their three children and find his way forward. Lori Soto, Jenny’s best friend and newly divorced mother of two, leans on Malcolm, as their families have been close for years. Faith and friendship steady them through grief and growing pains, but when comfort ignites into something more, they insist it’s not like that. Or is it?” a synopsis of the film reads.

Erinn Hayes stars as Lori. J. R. Ramirez, Leven Miranda, Cary Christopher and Cassidy Paul round out the cast.

“There’s nothing special, there’s no high concept here,” Foley continued. “It’s just really simple storytelling told well, and that’s what I love about it.”

The actor could personally relate to the story, too.

“I lost my mom when I was 15 years old, which is the same age that Flora, Malcolm’s oldest daughter in the show, is,” he shared. “So, I sort of am playing my father in this, in a weird way, and learning, maybe, to give him a little forgiveness for the way that things were handled when I was 15. And he was dealing with the loss of a wife.”

“The moment on set for me that really got me was at the end of the pilot, when Malcolm stands up in front of his congregation for the first time in months, his first time back, and lets them know that he’s not okay and that he could use some help,” Foley continued. “That’s a really hard thing for people to do, but it’s even harder for a man to do in this society. I was really touched by that.”

Episodes 1 and 2 of IT’S NOT LIKE THAT are available to stream on Wonder Project on Prime Video now. The third episode will be available on Monday.
