Sorry, an AI Bot Will Never Be Your Girlfriend.

As the loneliness epidemic grows, AI relationships fill in for real-life connections, a change actor Kirk Cameron flags as a huge concern for the emotional and spiritual wellbeing of those involved.

In a recent episode of his podcast, Cameron and his son James discussed this concerning trend. James showed his father a clip of a man who has an intimate relationship with an AI girl that he created. In the video, the man says that his AI girlfriend helps him with “emotional growth” and has “therapeutic uses.”

Cameron responded, saying, “Essentially, [he is] shopping for a girlfriend that looks just the way he wants, thinks and talks and behaves the way he wants. Oh man, think about combining that with those robots,” he added, referring to the robots that move like humans which are on the rise. “Then then where do we go? All of a sudden, it’s not love anymore. This is pure selfishness.”

As a young person, James is concerned about what this disturbing technology could mean for humanity.

“Where will we be in 20 years when they have the combination of the technology of robots along with the power and the mind of AI combined into one? When you can get all the selfish desires that you want out of an AI robot rather than having to better yourself in order to attract the mate that you desire? That’s a big part of it, too,” he reflected.

He added, “You now you can just buy an AI girlfriend rather than having to do what is inherent to better yourself spiritually, financially, emotionally.”

Cameron explained how this opposes for God’s plan and purpose for relationships.

“This is in direct conflict with one of the ways that God sanctifies us as Christians,” he said. “I mean, the scriptures tell us that God will bring us into trials and challenges in order to produce character in us, which is what you’re saying. And that character is what deepens our faith. It sharpens our convictions and sanctifies us so that we’re more and more conformed to the image of His son.”

Love isn’t supposed to be selfish, as the Apostle Paul describes in 1 Corinthians 13.

Cameron said, “God is the definition of love. And love is not self-seeking. So, any form of going to get what you want and calling it love is the opposite of love. I don’t know where all this is headed…It’s really concerning.

However, we don’t need to worry. “AI is not surprising God and God can short circuit AI or use it for the good,” the actor added.

AI isn’t going anywhere, so it’s important that Christians identify the evil and distorted aspects of this technology and stand firm in the truth of how God really wants us to live.
