SOUND OF FREEDOM Producer Calls Movie ‘Promise To God’

By Movieguide® Contributor

SOUND OF FREEDOM star Jim Caviezel and producer Eduardo Verástegui are sharing the importance of shedding light on sex trafficking.

“It’s a biblical story,” Caviezel said of SOUND OF FREEDOM’s plot during an interview with Movieguide®. “I love this story because it was like a modern day part of the gospel.”

The movie follows a former U.S. government agent who goes on a mission to save children from a sex trafficking ring in Colombia.

A portion of the Movieguide® review reads:

SOUND OF FREEDOM is gripping and heartbreaking, but hope-giving. The movie sheds light on the need for strong people to stand up for God’s children around the world who are caught in the vicious, abusive system of sex trafficking. SOUND OF FREEDOM has a strong Christian, moral worldview that promotes sacrifice and the message that “God’s children are not for sale.” MOVIEGUIDE® advises strong and extreme caution for the movie’s mature subject matter, implied and depicted violence, and abuse of children.

“I had to do something,” Verástegui said of his involvement in the project. “I’m a filmmaker, I can make movies, movies that can move people…we need a movement here, because there’s a lot of great people, a lot of great organizations around the world fighting to end child trafficking, but we need to put them all together.”

He continued, “For me, it was very easy to say, ‘Okay, I’m going to push pause on everything that I’m doing right now. I’m going to make a promise to God and to myself that I’m going to dedicate my entire life to ending child trafficking.’”

Caviezel echoed the producer’s statements, saying, “Our love for God’s children has got to be greater than our fear of evil, just as our love for Jesus Christ has got to be greater than our fear of the cross.”

SOUND OF FREEDOM was a major box office success.

“It snared more than $180 million at the domestic box office during its run, outpacing big studio films such as Warner Bros.’ THE FLASH on a budget of just $14.5 million,” CNBC reported. “It made nearly $250 million worldwide.”

Part of SOUND OF FREEDOM’s success was the “Pay It Forward” strategy many fans employed, purchasing tickets for people who might not have been able to afford a movie ticket.

“It is everyday people saying, ‘You need to see this film and be part of this movement to bring awareness to these children and the plight of human trafficking,’” Jared Geesey, Angel Studios’ senior VP of global distribution, told IndieWire. “That’s what the Pay It Forward technology is empowering, the generosity of other people who want you to see this so that your finances are not a reason for you to not be impacted by this story.”
