STRONG FATHERS, STRONG DAUGHTERS’ David and Maria Barrera: ‘You Don’t Have To Be a Super Dad. You Just Have To Be There’

By Movieguide® Contributor

Actor couple David and Maria Barrera recently shared the inspirations behind their new movie, STRONG FATHERS, STRONG DAUGHTERS, and how the movie’s message can help fathers who might not feel like they’re doing a good job connecting with their daughters.

“We have two daughters of our own,” David said, sharing how much he loved the book the movie was based on, “Strong Fathers, Strong Daughters,” by Meg Meeker.

“I think it’s encouraging [to] dads to know that it doesn’t matter where you think you lack, the fact that you care and are present and want to be there for her is 80% of it right there,” he continued. “Don’t be caught up in being perfect as a dad; just be involved.”

Maria chimed in, saying, “What I love about our movie and Meg’s book is that it encourages dads: you probably don’t even know how much of an ‘enough’ you are already, so go ahead and get in there.”

“[The movie] is very realistic in the unpleasantness of life,” she continued. “It doesn’t try to gloss over some of our ugliness or the mistakes…but then there’s also the real remedy in there, in the messaging. It’s not just ‘sprinkle positive things over realistic things and hope for the best.’ I think it really gets in there [about] facing life.”

“Meg Meeker gives fathers the opportunity to be involved and says it’s okay to be involved,” Davi shared. “Just being there…goes so far in a daughter’s life, and we see it in our daughters. We’ve always been present, I’ve always been a very talkative dad, asking them questions about their day and that kind of stuff… just getting involved in normal conversation is a great step.”

“You don’t have to be a special dad or a super dad,” David concluded. “You just have to be there.”

A portion of Movieguide®’s review of STRONG FATHERS, STRONG DAUGHTERS reads:

STRONG FATHERS, STRONG DAUGHTERS is a family comedy streaming on Pure Flix. A wealthy businessman named Steve Parston is surprised by his oldest daughter, Abby’s, sudden engagement to a missionary. Steve wants to support his first-born daughter, but he’s disappointed she wants to do missions and not continue in their family business. Steve wants to protect his daughter and hatches a plan to keep Abby close to home. However, when his scheming fails, he must reconcile supporting his daughter versus wanting to protect her. Will Steve’s selfish motives get the best of him? Or, will he be able to sacrifice his best wishes for his daughter and learn to love his family selflessly?

STRONG FATHERS, STRONG DAUGHTERS is a funny, heartfelt comedy full of faith, prayer, and themes of sacrifice, trust and family. Despite Steve’s shortcomings, the movie champions family, parenthood and marriage. One of Steve’s daughters is rebellious throughout the movie, but each character learns from their mistakes. There’s an underage party scene and some tense moments in STRONG FATHERS, STRONG DAUGHTERS. However, it’s a faith-friendly comedy the whole family can enjoy.

STRONG FATHERS, STRONG DAUGHTERS is streaming on Pure Flix now.
