While reflecting on his journey through the entertainment industry, Kevin Sorbo explained how God faithfully guided his path.
“Long before that break came, there were a thousand moments when I could have walked away and shut the book altogether, so to speak. I could have stayed in Minnesota. I could have let rejection wear me down,” Sorbo said. “I could have believed the voices that said, ‘Be realistic.’ And in doing so, I would have ignored something sacred: that quiet pull toward something more. Something that lacked certainty but overflowed with purpose.”
Instead, Sorbo pursued his dream of being a professional actor and eventually broke into the industry. However, that pull into the industry that kept him going eventually shifted into a calling to do something more.
“After years of success, I began to sense a shift that I could no longer ignore. Believe me, I tried for years. Yet, deep down, I wanted my work to reflect not just action, but conviction. Faith. Hope. Something eternal. And that desire, quiet at first, grew louder,” Sorbo explained. “But it was following my gut as a kid that led me to HERCULES, which gave me the evidence to trust the itch.”
Following this itch led him to pursue faith-based media. His first faith-centered movie was WHAT IF…, directed by Dallas Jenkins. Working on the movie was, at the time, the most fulfilling project Sorbo had ever completed, allowing him to continue down that path, even when Hollywood rejected him. A portion of Movieguide®’s review of WHAT IF… reads:
Kevin Sorbo does a terrific job as Ben. Another bright light in the movie is John Ratzenberger. He is the funniest angel to come along in a long time. The dialogue is terrific and funny. What makes the movie work is the direction. Dallas Jenkins exercises his considerable talent to bring out the best in each actor and tell the story in a heartwarming, hilarious, evangelistic manner.
Though the entertainment industry eventually blacklisted him for his stand for Christianity along with conservative values, he now sees a shift in Hollywood towards those same values.
“I think there’s [been] a shift. I think with Trump in office again right now, there’s definitely a shift…And Hollywood is shifting a little bit because I’m starting to get calls from studios saying, ‘Hey, you know, there’s this big thing with this [faith-based] stuff, so maybe send us a couple scripts,’” Sorbo told Fox News. “So I’m reaching out to Netflix and Amazon with a couple of the scripts that I have that aren’t in your face about faith, but there are messages in there, they’re positive messages instead of a negative one.”
Sorbo’s life and career are proof that the Lord moves for those who are faithful. Though the odds of him landing the life and career he has were astronomically low, he trusted the Lord’s plan and now serves as one of the leaders in faith-based media.
