What to Watch: Back-to-School Movies

Many families are sending their kids to school soon, and little ones may be feeling jittery about heading back to the classroom or going to school for the first time. Why not calm everyone’s nerves with a back-to-school movie night? From gentle titles like INSIDE OUT to action-packed flicks like SPIDER MAN: INTO THE SPIDERVERSE, this list has a little something for children in every age group. May the Lord bless your student this school year!

FINDING NEMO

FINDING NEMO is a wonderful animated adventure about a small clownfish who goes in search of his son, who's been put into a fish tank by human beings. Every second of FINDING NEMO is beautifully animated, spectacularly directed and written with great heart and strong moral values.

INSIDE OUT

INSIDE OUT is an animated comedy about a young girl who has a wonderful life, until her family moves to San Francisco and her emotions get out of control. INSIDE OUT is a well-made, delightful movie with a great plot line, excellent animation and a strong moral worldview.

MONSTERS UNIVERSITY

In MONSTERS UNIVERSITY, Mike and Sulley return to the big screen, this time to attend college together. MONSTERS UNIVERSITY has a lot of heart and soul, with a strong moral worldview and many laughs, but some monsters may be scary for very young children.

THE INCREDIBLES

THE INCREDIBLES is another incredible animated movie from Pixar and Disney, about two retired superhero parents who must battle a villain targeting their family. Beautifully animated, THE INCREDIBLES is full of exciting energy, fantastic fun, and humorous hilarity, with a very strong redemptive, Christian worldview full of many positive moral messages.

THE PEANUTS MOVIE

THE PEANUTS MOVIE is a wonderful animated movie based on the beloved comic strip created by Charles Schulz, wherein Charlie Brown falls for the new girl in town and tries to make a good first impression, despite his poor reputation. THE PEANUTS MOVIE is a lovable, funny, entertaining animated movie for all ages that teaches positive lessons of compassion, honesty, and selflessness, with only some slapstick and minor perilous scenes that might scary sensitive, very young children.

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE

SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE is an animated comic book adventure where different incarnations of Spider-Man from other dimensions, including two females and a talking pig, team together to stop a ruthless crime boss from destroying reality by using a gigantic machine to bring back his dead wife and son. Playful and lively, SPIDER-MAN: INTO THE SPIDER-VERSE is an exciting, funny movie with lots of action, heart, and faith, but there’s plenty of intense action violence, so caution is advised for children.

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID (2021)

DIARY OF A WIMPY KID is a new animated adaptation on Disney Plus of the Jeff Kinney book about a boy trying to navigate his first year of middle school with his friend. DIARY OF A WIMPY KID is an entertaining, fast-paced movie with engaging animation and a moral, redemptive message about forgiveness and sticking by your friends, but there’s some rude name-calling and brief moments of comic peril that merit caution for younger children.
