Pop Singer Turned Christian Artist Shows Off This Secret Skill
By Movieguide® Contributor
Christian artist Tasha Layton recently showed off her musical skills, from covering John Denver and Sheryl Crow to singing the BLUEY theme.
“We are going to be singing songs from a mug,” Layton said in a video for Hope Nation. She started things off by pulling a piece of paper that instructed her to sing a song that “reminds you of your favorite city.”
“I am from out in the middle of nowhere, South Carolina,” Layton said. “So, any song about the country…”
She and her band then launched into John Denver’s “Take Me Home Country Roads.”
In addition to covering songs like Sheryl Crow’s “Real Gone” and performing a few of her own — “Look What You’ve Done,” “How Far,” and “Never” — Layton also sang some unexpected songs.
“A song your kids have on repeat,” Layton read from the paper. Like many parents, that’s the BLUEY theme song.
When it came time to cover a song from her favorite person to tour with, Layton chose DC Talk’s “Jesus Freak,” impressing viewers with her rap skills.
Layton got her start in the music industry as a backup singer for Katy Perry.
“Before I entered music to do my own music, there were a lot of years that I wasn’t sure how God was going to work it out,” she told CBN. “I didn’t understand why I was taking this path, or going in this direction, or how He was going to work it all together for His good.”
Layton explained that, while she was offered a record deal to make secular music, she “felt so firmly that it wasn’t what I was called to do. And there were compromises in that world…I wanted to connect people to God with my music, with my actions, with my team, with my integrity — and I didn’t feel like I could fully do that with freedom, going that route.”
Today, she makes Christian music, saying, “I’m so fulfilled. I’m standing in the fulfillment of prayers.”
Layton’s latest single, “Worship Through It,” is a testament to resilience and persevering through life’s challenges.
“It has been so amazing watching this project come to life, and we hope it blesses you!” she said in a statement about the song.
Movieguide® previously reported on Layton’s faith:
Tasha Layton is encouraging us to “pour out your heart” to God, especially when you’re unsure of His will.
During a recent appearance on Air1, host Lauren Lee recounted her first meeting with Layton. It was during a difficult time in Lee’s life; she and her husband were struggling with infertility.
“You said, ‘Pray hardest when it’s hardest to pray,’” Lee recalled.
Layton replied, “I think it’s those times when you need to hear the truth of God the most.”
“When you pray — we can’t stand on our prayers,” she continued. “We stand on what God says to us in His word, or when He says something by the Holy Spirit.”
The singer acknowledged that it can be “tough when you are not sure what God’s will [is] and you don’t necessarily have something to stand on and you’re praying for something.”
“When [I] haven’t gotten a word, I just pour my heart out to the Father because He knows,” Layton continued. “There’s nothing we’ve experienced in this life that He doesn’t know already…so pour out your heart to the Father and seek first the Kingdom of God.”
