Erin Napier just shared the hilarious — and relatable — moment that tested her marriage to husband Ben.

“I have huge news in something that happened in our marriage this week,” Erin joked in an episode of “The Heirloom Podcast” last month. “This is very juicy.”

She shared that the garbage can in Ben’s shop needed to be emptied because “about August was the last time that trash was taken out. And he’s been shoving stuff in it since then.”

“Our marriage has never been more tested than it was by this thousand-pound trash can,” Erin laughed.

The couple worked together to take the trash out, but the bag “immediately ripped.” The can was filled with “filth” and “liquid” at the bottom, which “came out on the floor” when the bag ripped again.

“And I said, ‘You have to do better than this,’” Erin said. “We got the trash to the road and the trash is gone now…But anyway, what I want you to know is that it tested our marriage for about seven minutes. It was tough.”

Erin said the moment was “rough” for the pair but explained the reason their marriage is happy and largely conflict-free is because “I don’t let myself tell stories about him. I just say it. I say it right to him. ‘Are you doing this? Are you thinking that?’ And he says right back to me what he’s really doing and thinking. We’re together all day, so it’s very easy for us to do that.”

She concluded, “Our communication level cuts out my [negative] creativity in a very good, positive way.”

In an interview with Us Weekly, Ben agreed, explaining, “Erin and I always say communication is a key element in a happy marriage…We ping-pong off each other.”

“I bet 90% of the things that we complain about in our marriages are so unimportant,” Erin added. “[Early on], if Ben ever did anything that was irking me — like leaving cabinet doors open — I would say something. But at this stage of our mature marriage, instead of feeling angry when I see something like him leaving his coffee cups everywhere, I immediately think of all the wonderful things he’s done for me and our girls today. And I take his mug and put it in the sink, and I don’t complain.”

The couple also shared their philosophy of clear communication during an appearance on THE DREW BARRYMORE SHOW.

“We tell each other everything. And people say that. They say communication is key. We tell each other everything,” Ben said. “I know it sounds elementary, but it really is.”

The Napiers might make their marriage look easy, but Erin’s recent story is proof that every relationship requires both work and understanding.
