NFL broadcaster and Super Bowl champion Tony Dungy preached the gospel on the streets of San Francisco, California, before Super Bowl LX.

“My name is Tony Dungy, and I’m excited to be here,” the Pro Football Hall of Famer said in a video shared by Christhlete. “I just want to tell you one quick story. I was blessed to play in Super Bowl XIII. I played for the Pittsburgh Steelers. We were playing the Dallas Cowboys. We have won two Super Bowls. Dallas has won two Super Bowls, and everyone said, this is going to be the game of the century. Whoever wins is the best team in football.”

The two-time Super Bowl winner continued: “We had a chapel service before the game, and the chaplain was a guy by the name of Doc Eshelman, and he said, ‘Everybody’s going to be excited about this game, but after it’s over, that doesn’t make any difference. Yes, you want to win, but do you have a relationship with Christ that is going to be the biggest story to come out of this game, not who wins or loses? Who has a relationship with Christ. You can win the game, and if you don’t know Jesus, you’ll be a loser.'”

“That was 47 years ago at Super Bowl XIII. We’re at Super Bowl LX, and it’s the same message,” Dungy added. “Yes, you can come and enjoy the game, the Super Bowl, and all of the excitement. But if you don’t know Jesus, you came out as a loser. So what we want to do is pray that your walk and your witness and all the energy here go forward to tell people the message of Jesus. To tell people, Jesus is the Way.”

Dungy never shies away from an opportunity to speak about his faith. Though his playing career was cut short (1977-1979), as a coach, he strived to shine Christ’s light to everyone he worked with.

“I didn’t know my playing career was going to be cut short and I’d soon be coaching. But then I became a Christian coach, and for 27 years, that was my goal, to be a Christian coach, and now I’m a broadcaster,” he told Sports Spectrum last moth. “My goal is to be a Christian broadcaster, and I learned that from Tony Evans very early on: Christian first in whatever you do you.”

Though Dungy personally knows the impact winning a Super Bowl can have, he also recognizes that worldly success is nothing compared to eternity with God, which is why he shares the gospel any chance he gets.
