Did you know TOY STORY was originally a very different movie?

“Tim Allen and I and everybody involved, we recorded a TOY STORY movie, about 80 minutes of it that was completely thrown out,” Tom Hanks, who voiced Woody, recently revealed during an appearance on THE LATE SHOW WITH STEPHEN COLBERT.

The actor said it was a “different story,” but “quite frankly, it didn’t work. It wasn’t TOY STORY. It wasn’t what Pixar was going for.”

Eventually, Hanks got a call from the movie’s director, John Lasseter, who told him, “We looked at it and it’s just not working, and we would like to start all over from scratch.”

“So then we began the process all over again, which is about a two and a half to three year process,” he said, marveling at the “extraordinary” life TOY STORY and its sequels have had.

Hanks has voiced Woody in every TOY STORY movie, including the upcoming TOY STORY 5. Tim Allen, who voices Buzz Lightyear, recently revealed some details from the movie’s plot.

“I [don’t know] how much I can tell you,” the HOME IMPROVEMENT star said during an episode of JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE!, adding, “They reboot everything. It’s all about Jessie, which is really cool. She’s in trouble, and she needs help. We’re all over, so she has to gather everybody.”

In another interview with LIVE WITH KELLY AND MARK, Allen said, “It’s such a great story. I can only tell a little bit of it. It’s a Jessie story, Tom and I have to reunite, and there’s just the funniest thing, because there’s a whole bunch of Buzzes involved. And there’s a reason why there’s a whole bunch of me, so there’s 100 of me in a separate story, and I’m having so much fun.”

While the movie’s stars are remaining tight-lipped about major plot details, Andrew Stanton, TOY STORY 5’s writer and director, spoke about the movie’s story at the 2024 Disney D23 conference.

“[Through these characters] we’ve all learned about loyalty and belonging and friendship,” he said. “These characters have given us a unique perspective on growing up and navigating life and in all the TOY STORY films, above all else, the job of the toys has been to be there for their kids.”

Stanton continued, “With TOY STORY 5, the toys’ jobs get exponentially harder when our toy crew goes head-to-head with what kids are obsessed with today: Electronics.”

TOY STORY fans are glad the movie ended up the way it did — and are excited to see the beloved characters go out on a new adventure!
