Tyler Perry is sharing the piece of advice his mother gave him about how faith and dreams intertwine.

“She said, ‘You know what? Just give it up. Just go get your job working at the phone company. You’re never going to make it with these plays. Just go get a job at the phone company,’” the writer and director recalled during TBN’s CHASE YOUR GOD-GIVEN DREAMS.

Perry said he was “in tears,” and his mother quickly began to try to comfort him.

“She said, ‘Baby, I’m so sorry. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know how important this was for you. But what I want you to understand is that I don’t care how many people love you and encourage you, or the ones that try to tear you down or destroy you. When God has a dream for you, it is your dream,’” he shared.

Perry said his mother continued, “And there are people who love you who would think that they’re saying the right things to try to protect you, or there are people that have been in your lives and watched you grow up, and they don’t know what God has put down inside of you because they think they’re too familiar with you. But what you have to understand is when God has something for you, you have to go for it fully.’”

Perry lost his mother in 2009, but he has often spoke about the influence she still has on his life.

“I heard the best quote and — I can’t remember who actually said it — but the best quote was, ‘The first weapon I ever held was my mother’s hand,’” he said during an appearance on the TODAY show. “And with those hands, she taught me so much about prayer and getting through things and moving through and just being a good person, so those things for me are very, very important.”

Perry has also previously spoken about his Christian faith. In a video for TBN, he emphasized the importance of teaching children about God.

“I think it’s very important, and it is so selfish of those of us who have God, who know God, to not invite others to bring their children to learn the same thing,” he explained. “It’s really, really selfish because I promise you, if you don’t give them God, they’re going to turn to something.”

Perry’s mother’s words are a reminder that, no matter how difficult it might seem, God has a plan for your life.
