Want to Leave a Legacy of Faith? Here’s How

Christian artist Matthew West invited his dad, Pastor Joseph West, onto his podcast to talk about leaving a legacy of faith.

Joseph pulled from the lyrics of his son’s song “Unashamed” to kick things off:

So what’s gonna be said of me when it’s all said and done?
Will I stand for my beliefs or will I turn around and run?
Well, let the whole world hear me say
I’m unashamed
Of the gospel of Jesus Christ
And the truth that changed my life
For the name above all names
I’m unashamed

“We all worry about how can we stand strong and leave a legacy of faith,” Joseph said before diving into three things believers can do each day to accomplish this.

“First, understand that we are in a spiritual battle,” he said. He then quoted Ephesians 6, which says, “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.”

Second, the pastor urges we “Dress for battle every day” and reminded listeners of Ephesians 6:13-17:

Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

His third point? To keep the faith throughout life’s struggles.

“Our legacy will be like Paul’s when he said in 2 Timothy 4:7 ‘and I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith,’” he said.

“Maybe at our funeral someday, there’ll be many that will get up and say, ‘Joe West loved Jesus with all his heart and tried to share His love and power and hope to as many as he could and especially [had] a heart to make sure his children would serve Jesus all their life,'” he added.

“Being unashamed for Christ…I don’t know that there’s a greater legacy that can be left behind than somebody who spent their life loving Jesus and making Him known, seeking to know Him more and to make Him known,” Matthew chimed in.

The singer frequently encourages his fans in their faith. In a recent Instagram post, he said, “God calls us to be courageous, bold, and #unashamed. Are you going to stand up for Him? He knows we need help, and He alone is the one who will equip us to do what He has called us to do. 🙏”
