What do we do when our prayers aren’t answered the way we hoped and when suffering continues? Sadie Robertson Huff shared her thoughts along with a message of encouragement in a video posted to Instagram.

“I don’t know the ‘why’ for the suffering right now. I don’t know why it has to be like this, but I don’t doubt that God is still good even when my circumstances aren’t,” she began.

She added that she doesn’t doubt that God loves her, “even when I don’t feel that way in the moment.”

Huff continued, “There’s a promise that’s yet to come, and it’s anchored in Christ, Jesus being raised from the dead and giving us the hope of eternal life. And so that’s a very deep answer back to a deep question. But prayer is necessary.”

Huff continued by explaining that the way we should pray is laid out in the Bible, pointing to The Lord’s Prayer found in Matthew 6:9-13.

She continued, “Even He says it there, ‘Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. On Earth as it is in heaven.’ But not only does He give us an example of how to pray, He exemplifies how to pray throughout all of his life. If you go read all the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, you’ll see Jesus pray.

Huff noted that she has open tabs of examples in the Bible where Jesus prayed so that she too can learn how to talk to God.

“You don’t always know the outcome. You don’t always know if it’s going to change God’s heart or mind,” she said. But it’s not even always about changing God’s heart mind. It’s changing your it’s like submitting your heart and mind to the will of God, even when the will of God is not the outcome you would have wanted, expected or hope for or believe for.”

Huff experienced the power of prayer recently when her baby daughter Kit started choking and stopped breathing, leading the family to call 9-1-1.

“Everyone went into action and into prayer. Mom called 911, I started CPR, and everyone began to pray out loud and move the other kids downstairs,” she wrote on Instagram earlier this week.

Thankfully, those prayers were answered, and everything ended up being okay. “We stayed the night [at the hospital] for observation, but she charmed the nurses just a few hours later and is now perfectly healthy, happy, and brightening everyone’s day!” Huff said.

Whether God answers our prayers how we want Him to or not, we can rest in knowing that He has the final say and there is a reason for every answered and unanswered request.
