NCIS: ORIGINS, which explores the early career and life of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, has been renewed for a second season. Here’s everything you need to know.

“This season, our new and returning series continue to showcase CBS as the leader in launching and programming the biggest hits with mass appeal for broadcast and streaming viewers,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment, when NCIS: ORIGINS was announced as one of the network’s shows being renewed. “These returning shows represent a mix of long-standing hits and a new generation of fan favorites. In collaboration with our extraordinarily talented partners in front of and behind the camera, we look forward to delivering another successful season.”

Since it just finished the first season this week, nothing has been teased about Season 2, however, the season finale left the fate of Special Agent Lala Dominguez in question, while also introducing a twist to Mike Franks’ story which will provide a great starting point.

“There’s a big question about Lala that will change everything and everyone and the team,” Mariel Molino, who plays Agent Dominguez on the show, told TVInsider.

“There’s a scene at the end of the episode which was one of the most challenging things that I’ve done as an actor physically. It’s nighttime. Stunts were involved. So many different departments had to be so cohesive to pull it off,” she continued. “I wanted to make sure that I executed properly — because of the story and to get the shot the director wanted. That was one of the most surreal and scary experiences that I’ve had as an actor, which will make for a very exciting finale.”

While the introduction of new characters and new storylines has been exciting, the show has also made a point to connect with characters’ backgrounds that had previously been revealed from NCIS. In doing so, the showrunners have made ORIGINS approachable for newcomers, while also rewarding longtime fans of the franchise.

“We really made a point to create a show for both our fans, which we adore and are so grateful for, but also for new viewers,” said showrunner Gina Lucita Monreal. “So, we really tried to strike a balance between those two groups of people so that you don’t have to have seen any episodes of the mothership NCIS to understand and invest in ORIGINS. But at the same time, we remain true to canon and try to give those Easter eggs to our existing fans as well.”

While all of these fans are excited for the show to come back for a second season, they now have to endure the long months of waiting before new episodes release this fall.
