What’s the Most Popular Thanksgiving Dish in Your State?

Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without your favorite foods. From turkey to cranberry sauce, stuffing to green bean casserole, there is something everyone loves.

A recent poll from Newsweek shared the favorite Thanksgiving food items in each state. Turkey, however, didn’t make the list.

“The data always suggests that turkey’s prominence at Thanksgiving is fading because it is not liked by younger generations,” said Eric Jones, an assistant professor at Rowan College.

“Older Americans over age 60 are the least picky eaters,” he added. He also shared that younger people “have constantly had more choices throughout their lives, especially with food, so they don’t feel obligated to eat something they might not like or even to pretend to like it.”

The top items that did make the list, however, were green bean casserole, sweet potato casserole, cornbread dressing and candied yams, and they seem to be popular depending on the region of the country.

For example, the West Coast favors candied yams as their favorite Thanksgiving dish. Central and Midwest states prefer green bean casserole, as do the upper East coast states Rhode Island and Maine. Cornbread dressing, a version of stuffing made out of corn bread, is popular in the South, while many Eastern states and Florida prefer sweet potato casserole.

“If you live in a certain region or have a certain cultural background that informs how your family eats, that is why that is going to apply to Thanksgiving,” food writer Sheri Castle told Newsweek.

Castle also mentioned how the popular trend of a “Friendsgiving” celebration may contribute to people’s specific tastes. “A group of people bringing what Thanksgiving means to them to a common table, and you taste it and are exposed to it for the first time, that will have more of an influence on how people come to define Thanksgiving than any magazine article that has ever been written,” she said.
