Kevin Costner shared the incredible moment when he bought his father a truck for Christmas after he found success in Hollywood — and the heartwarming way his father responded.
“I got a truck for my father, and I didn’t let him know what it was, and he didn’t think [acting] would work for me, and he had a lot of advice for me, and it was do something else or whatever. But he even saw that something was happening. But, I gave him some clues [for his present]: ‘Go to here, go to there.’ We never really do that. We normally just rip the paper off, so he was like, ‘Why am I getting these, go over to here?’ But he did…” Costner told Fox News. “And at one moment, one of the things said, ‘It’s in the garage and the trip will be over.’ And [the gift] was in a little box, and he opened it up, and I started playing the music from Silverado. And I had bought him a Silverado truck.”
“And he looked at it and he heard the music — he came from out of the dust bowl. He watched his parents lose everything in Oklahoma. They moved to California, to Compton. And he was trying to make sense of the music, of the keys that looked like the keys to a car that was a Silverado,” the actor continued. “And then it dawned on him, and then he fell out of his seat, and he wept. He wept…his shoulder heaved, and he wept that he could have a present like that. That his son would buy him a truck.”
Costner has previously opened up about what his family means to him.
“You’ve got to get down on the ground and play with them,” he said of raising his kids. “And you teach them to be independent — and the sad part about that is they become that. I’m like any other parent: I’m trying to figure it out.”
“I work as a provider. I’m a father and I’m a husband, but the world doesn’t revolve around me,” he continued. “When I’m not making a movie, I’m living and on the freeway with my wife, getting the kids to their stuff or I’m waiting for them to come out of a party. I’m just twiddling my thumbs. People have a wrong idea about how my life works.”
Meanwhile, Costner is grateful that he continues to enjoy a successful career in Hollywood, which allows him to care for his family in the way that he desires to.
“I’m terribly satisfied in my own life that God allowed me to get these first two [HORIZON movies] done,” Costner said of the movies. “I mean, if I’m hit by lightning, who knows what happens? At least I went West.”
For all his success in Hollywood, it amazing to see how Costner is a family man who cares about the needs of those around him more than his own desires. Hopefully he will continue to be a mainstay in the industry and encourage other stars to live in this way.
