Christian pastor and author Max Lucado believes children raised in Christian homes in today’s world will have strong faith.

“I think it’s a great day to raise kids…because kids can develop a faith that is so hardy, so real. It’s not a pretense faith,” Lucado told Christian Parenting executive director Steph Thurling in a recent podcast. “It’s gonna require some concrete, so helping our kids understand their faith and fight these battles, it’s a great time.”

Thurling agreed.

“I love that truth to parents because sometimes it does feel really overwhelming,” she told Lucado. “Like, it’s just too much and it seems like unfair that we have this little phone that has caused so much anxiety and so much change in the world.”

She continued, “But also it brings a lot of opportunity, and our kids, we do get to raise kids who are on fire for God because they have to be. Because…that’s really the only way to do it in today’s world.”

As a Christian author of children’s and adult books for over 40 years, Lucado is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to faith-based parenting.

Lucado believes anyone with parenting fears needs to give those things to Christ.

“In fact, if we don’t, we’ll take our fears out on our kids. Fear turns some parents into paranoid prison guards who monitor every minute, check the background of every friend,” the Anxious for Nothing author explained on his website. “They stifle growth and communicate distrust. A family with no breathing room suffocates a child.”

Parents can avoid this through prayer.

“Prayer is the saucer into which parental fears are poured to cool.  Jesus says so little about parenting, makes no comments about spanking, breast-feeding, sibling rivalry, or schooling… His big message to moms and dads? Bring your children to me. Raise them in a greenhouse of prayer,” Lucado said.

As a father of three, he understands parents can feel the deepest kinds of hurt when their children are spiritually or physically unwell.

He said, “You find yourself alone on the path, wondering if Christ has forgotten you and your child. He hasn’t. He never dismisses a parent’s prayer. Keep giving your child to God, and in the right time and the right way, God will give your child back to you.”

Lucado’s most recent book is Tame Your Thoughts, which provides tools to help readers calm their guilt and worry. It’s available wherever books are sold.
