During the faith-themed episode of this season of AMERICAN IDOL, judge Luke Bryan credited his foundation in the Lord for getting through hard times.
“I was a Baptist church kid singing in the church choir. When you spend that time in church, and you understand your faith and your beliefs… it’s what you gotta really lean on to get through this challenging life,” Bryan told the contestants. “I mean, when you look at all the ups and downs, it takes your faith and belief that there’s a higher power to get you through all this stuff. So faith, when you grow up on the baptist church singing, I mean, we certainly heard a lot of sermons on it. So it’s really in my head about being solid in your faith for many, many years.”
“I think the small town values and small town work ethic and what you learned in the church and your family and your neighbors carries me through life, the rest of my life, and that’s why I don;’t shy away from getting back home and going to a fish fry and getting my feet in the Georgia mud,” Bryan added.
Bryan has never been afraid to share his faith, and not only tries to stress its importance to those he mentors in the music industry, but also does his best to pass it down to his children.

“We try to stress, every day, stress to them, the importance of Jesus and Christianity and being a good person and believing in higher powers,” Bryan explained in an interview with KDHL Radio in 2015. “I think during Christmas time, with kids, they get wrapped up in Santa Claus and stuff, so I think it’s fun that you sit back and really try to have a talk with them about the real reason.”
“When you become a parent, the anxieties of getting them through this life never go away,” he told PEOPLE. “There’s only so much you can do. You got to turn it over to Jesus, or your higher power, to look after them, because at the end of the day, that’s what you have to kind of plant your flag in — that God and Jesus are looking after them.”
Meanwhile faith has blossomed on AMERICAN IDOL in recent seasons as many of the top contestants come from a faith background and are not afraid to share how their faith remains their foundation.
“A lot of these people who made the show were raised in church, sang in church, and who’ve put faith in Christ Jesus,” former IDOL contestant Danny Gokey explained, pointing to contestants like Lauren Daigle, Jordin Sparks, Colton Dixon, Kris Allen, Phil Stacey, Mandisa and Melinda Doolittle.
“But AMERICAN IDOL, I think there’s just such an influence that churches had,” he continued. “Music is a huge part of church. That’s where I got my start, that’s where many people got their start. So they’re always going back to their roots.”
Praise the Lord for the way IDOL is embracing the faith of its contestants and allows them to share the way the Lord impacts their life through avenues such as a faith-based episode around Easter.
