Luke Bryan Adopted Nephew, Nieces After Parents’ Deaths: ‘God Has a Plan’

Country star Luke Bryan and his wife, Caroline Boyer, explained why they adopted their nieces and nephew after their parents died.

Their nephew, Tilden Cheshire, 21, and their two nieces, Jordan, 28, and Kris Cheshire, 24, lost their mom, Kelly, in 2007, and seven years later, their dad, Ben, died in 2014.

“She was home with her three-year-old, and it was like someone turned the lights out. They never determined what happened. The autopsies, the coroner, no one could figure it out,” Bryan told PEOPLE of Kelly’s death.

Shortly after Ben’s death, Bryan and Boyer adopted the three teenagers.

“We never thought twice about it. You know, it was never something that he and I had to sit down and talk about, ‘Should we take this on?’ We just did that,” Boyer told GOOD MORNING AMERICA.

The couple also share Thomas “Bo” Boyer Bryan, 15, and Tatum “Tate” Christopher Bryan, 13.

Bryan added, “I’ve watched my family go through ebbs and flows where we get mad at God and we get mad at why this has happened. Well, you keep going and you try to, try to be as positive as you can, and you try to appreciate every day. You’ll never get back to 100 percent. You’ll always be working to get back to 75 percent.”

As his nieces and nephew get older, the country singer’s role in their lives has changed.

“I woke up one day and I’m raising a teen,” he said in 2017. “And it’s a challenge because my main thing with Til is just properly giving the right amount of advice and realizing you’re talking to someone who is becoming an adult.”

“I have to be that parent role where if he does something, he needs to get in trouble, but I want to be a friend to him too,” Bryan added.

Despite the tragedies his family has faced, Bryan relies on his faith.

“I think with everything that’s happened in my family, I just have to lean on my faith and the understanding that God has a plan for all of us,” he said. “We just wake up every day and do our best. I’ll get down in the dumps, and then I’ll meet a Make-A-Wish kid, and I’ll ask myself, ‘What are you complaining about? You just have to keep your faith strong and rock on.

Award-winning country singer Luke Bryan recently told podcast hosts Rob Stone and Holly Hutton all about a fishing trip he wants to go on with his family of four this year.

“I’ve done an Amazon peacock bass fishing trip. My children know that I’ve done it, and they want to go do it,” the singer said.

Bryan and his wife Caroline share sons Bo, 15, and Tate, 13.

“It’s all about including the family on these things too,” Bryan said. “I’ve got a lot of crazy little things that we’ll try to check off the list as a family. I’ve done a really, really great job of brainwashing [my] children into doing exactly what I like to do.”
