The live-action LILO & STITCH will officially be available on Disney+ starting Sept. 3.
The movie, a “wildly funny and touching story” directed by Dean Fleischer Camp, follows Lilo, “a lonely Hawaiian girl and the fugitive alien who helps to mend her broken family.”
According to Variety, LILO & STITCH garnered $182.6 million during its opening Memorial Day weekend box office. It was also the first Hollywood movie of 2025 to hit $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
Movieguide® praised its “Very strong moral, pro-family worldview,” though advises caution for younger children comical violence and very brief, light foul language.
It stars Maia Kealoha as Lilo, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong as Nani and Chris Sanders as Stitch. Other cast members include Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham ,Courtney B. Vance and Zach Galifianakis.
Disney has already confirmed a LILO & STITCH 2 is in development.
“The love that people have for LILO & STITCH continues to grow, and the goal with this new retelling was for audiences to be able to enjoy these characters on the big screen again and hopefully have just as much fun watching it as we had making it,” Alan Bergman, co-chairman, Disney Entertainment, said in a press release. “We are tremendously proud of this history-making launch, and I want to give my thanks to our teams who have done such great work as well as to the fans who have made this exceptional opening possible.”
David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, added that “Stitch is an example of what Disney actually does best.”
“An extraordinary animated film from 2002 that becomes a series that then over time creates a real fanship, which leads to us looking at the idea of creating this wonderful film that we now are bringing out to the world,” he said.
While the movie was the perfect way to “kickoff” summer, according to producer Jonathan Eirich, it could also make a great back-to-school family movie night.
“This movie is such an emotional roller coaster. It’s fun, it’s chaotic, and it has so much heart,” Eirich added. “We talk a lot about the experience of laughing and crying with other people in a cinema — there’s nothing like it.”
The live-action sequel will bring back co-creator Chris Sanders (THE WILD ROBOT), who co-wrote and co-directed the original animated LILO & STITCH.
Sanders voiced Stitch in both the animated and live-action films. However, no other cast members have been named for the second installment.
While no details about the sequel’s production timeline have been announced, fans can get ready to enjoy Lilo and Stitch’s adventures from home on Sept. 3.
