While the world’s focus on social media isn’t always good, THE CHOSEN star Jonathan Roumie encourages Christians to embrace it and use it to spread the gospel.
“As someone who’s been blessed to portray Jesus in THE CHOSEN, I’ve seen firsthand how a story shared online can touch a heart, soften a soul, even change a life,” Roumie told the Jubilee of Digital Missionaries and Catholic Influencers in Rome, per Crosswalk Headlines.
The Jubilee of Digital Missionaries occurred last week and was an effort “to celebrate, train, and inspire those called to evangelize on digital platforms.”
“You’re doing the same,” Roumie continued, “whether it’s through a post, a reel, a comment thread, or a live stream — you’re showing up in these digital spaces with the heart of Christ, not to preach at people, but to meet them, to listen, to engage, to start conversations that actually matter. So don’t grow weary. Don’t underestimate the power of what you’re doing. This is holy ground, and your presence online — authentic, prayerful, joyful — that’s part of God’s plan to keep us talking about Jesus.”
The actor believes that outreach online is what “evangelization looks like today. It’s not just pulpits and church walls — it’s Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, blogs, all of it,” per the Catholic News Agency.
“What you’re doing is mission. Period. You’re reaching people wherever they are, no matter what they believe or don’t believe, no matter how much they understand or don’t understand. And that openness, that willingness to connect without judgment creates space for real dialogue, for moments of grace, for Christ to move in surprising ways,” Roumie continued.
“You never know who’s watching or listening or scrolling, and whose life might be changed just because you shared a little hope,” he concluded. “God bless you. I’m praying for you all. I love you and seriously, thank you for being out there.”
Roumie often shares about his faith on his social media, especially when it comes to his portrayal of Christ in THE CHOSEN.
In a post from May, he reflected on how God’s blessed him through the hit Bible show, saying, “My cup runneth over with gratitude and thanksgiving for all the Lord has done in my life. Seven years ago today, my life utterly changed for the better. I had no idea what God was up to or how unbelievably far He would take me in service to Him.”
“As a flawed and imperfect human being…I’m truly unworthy of the honor of playing the most perfectly Divine/Human Christ, but I will humbly continue to accept this mission for as long as He will allow me to do so,” he continued.
Roumie concluded, “Jesus makes me want to do better…to BE better every day, and in every possible configuration and interaction with my neighbors in this life.”
Whether interacting with people online or ministering to them in person, Christians should strive to share the gospel wherever God brings them.
