MODERN FAMILY star Ty Burrell is grateful he left Hollywood after the show ended so that he could raise his kids in Utah and away from LA.
“It’s just been spectacular,” Burrell said about living in Utah. “We moved here right after [MODERN FAMILY] ended, and I don’t have any regrets. It’s been lovely and a great place to raise kids… At first, when we moved here, it almost felt like cosplay, like we were pretending to be people who were outdoorsy, and now we really truly love it.”
Though Burrell is happy to be away from Hollywood, he wishes he could continue to pursue acting and working in the industry. Since MODERN FAMILY ended in 2020, he has taken on extremely limited voiceover roles which he can do from home.
Burrell has a similar mindset to many other celebrities who have left California to raise their families away from the hustle and bustle of LA and are so thankful for their decision. VAMPIRE DIARIES star Ian Somerhalder, for example, enjoys his much simpler life on a farm, rather than continuing to pursue an acting career.
“Walking through the farm with kids and dogs and family,” he said of his new life. “Every stop, you’re pulling off of trees or off of bushes, pulling up out of the ground and feeding everyone as you’re moving through the farm…It is a lot of work. It’s unbelievable when you see these amazing creature life forms…and how they all live on the farm together is really special.”

Somerhalder’s wife, Nikki Reed, was also in the industry and agrees that leaving it to raise their kids with a simpler life was worth the struggle of giving up careers they loved.
“It was a very scary pivot for me to leave the only career I had ever known, that I had worked in since I was 13, to try something new,” she explained. “But I learned a lot about what’s important to me. A lot of things that came with a Hollywood lifestyle, there isn’t synergy with the priorities I now have in my life and with the people I want to surround myself with.”
“I made a conscious choice to give my [children] the most normal life possible,” Reed added. “My greatest joy is watching my daughter run through the dirt with her shoes off.”
In a world where so many people give up the important things in life to pursue fame and wealth, it is always encouraging to hear from actors who gave up a life of glamour for the sake of their family.
