YouTube’s Latest Upgrade Puts AI-Generated Videos into Shorts
By Movieguide® Contributor
YouTube added new generative AI video feature called Veo 2 which will allow creators to generate video clips to add to their Shorts.
“Today, Dream Screen is getting another major upgrade with the integration of Google DeepMind’s newest video generation model, Veo 2, making it more powerful than ever,” YouTube said in a blog post. “And we’re also now launching a new capability powered by Veo 2: generating standalone video clips that you can add to any of your Shorts. Need a specific scene but don’t have the right footage? Want to turn your imagination into reality and tell a unique story? Simply use a text prompt to generate a video clip that fits perfectly into your narrative, or create a whole new world of content. It’s that easy!”
Dream Screen, which the company introduced in September 2023, already generated “images and videos for Shorts content based on text descriptions,” The Verge reported, but “these could only previously be applied as virtual green screen backgrounds.”

“Veo 2 understands real-world physics and human movement better, making its output more detailed and realistic,” ouTube Director of Product Dina Berrada wrote. “You can even specify a style, lens, or cinematic effect, making Dream Screen an easy and fun way to express yourself.”
TechCrunch noted that videos generated with the feature will be marked as created by AI using DeepMind’s SynthID tool.
The new feature is now available for users in US, Canada, New Zealand and Australia, although expansion to other countries is planned for the future.
Veo 2 comes in response to OpenAI’s “Sora,” a “text-to-video generator.”
