What You Need To Know:
LAND HO! is well acted and filmed, but the script is a bit episodic. Ultimately, the movie says that having a joy of living and a lot of self-confidence are essential to personal happiness. There’s something to be said for being self-confident and having a joyful, positive attitude to life. However, in LAND HO!, the filmmakers put these things into a godless and Romantic context or worldview. The movie does express compassion for hurting people, but LAND HO! also contains many obscenities and other lewd content.

More Detail:
LAND HO! is a funny, sometimes endearing fictional travelogue that plays like a documentary, about two elderly men who travel around Iceland to perk up their spirits. Sadly, the script contains crude, lewd language by one of the men and other problems, so the movie isn’t as appealing to a mass audience as it could have been.
The movie opens with Mitch cajoling his brother-in-law from Australia but now living in America, Colin, into vacationing with him in Iceland. Mitch says the trip is on him. He also wants to cheer up Colin, whose first wife, Mitch’s sister-in-law, died and who recently divorced from his second wife.
During the trip, the gregarious Mitch cajoles Colin into having a good time, despite the occasional disagreement. They encounter fellow adventurers, including a female cousin and her friend. They also get lost, smoke Mitch’s marijuana and grouse about their two sons. All this occurs against Iceland’s vast, haunting landscapes.
LAND HO! is well acted and filmed. This helps the episodic script stay on track by focusing on the personalities of the two main characters, played by Earl Lynn Nelson and Paul Eenhoorn.
Basically, the message of LAND HO! comes from the attitude that the two older men develop as they interact with each other, with the people they encounter, and with the environment around them. Mostly, the movie says that having a joy of living and a lot of self-confidence are essential to personal happiness.
There’s something to be said for being self-confident and having a joyful, positive attitude to life. However, in LAND HO!, the filmmakers put these things into a godless and Romantic, if not pagan and humanist, context or worldview instead of a Christian or biblical one. Also, Mitch, the guy who’s paying for the vacation, often makes lewd sexual comments out of nowhere. He also has a habit of smoking marijuana. Colin at first refuses to smoke the pot with him, saying that he hasn’t smoked any marijuana since the 1970s. Eventually, however, he relents.
In addition to these things, LAND HO! contains many obscenities plus some salty talk from Mitch. Also, one scene implies that Colin fornicates with a black woman he meets on the road, after Mitch, he and she enjoy bathing in a remote hot springs. This negative content is counteracted a little bit by the compassion Mitch shows for Colin’s troubles and the sympathy Colin shows toward Mitch having to cope with being retired from his longtime job as a physician.
